Hello all!

I'm new here so first I wanted to say Hi to everyone!!

I did look for answers to my question but couldn't find what I was looking for exactly so I'm hoping you fine folks can chime in & give me some good advice.

I am trying to decide who to go with as a mentor program for selling on Amazon, eventually my own e-comm store.
So I'm down to a couple results however I'm sure there are some others I've never heard of. I would be very grateful for any input you guys could give me about which of these you think I should do, or not & why. Also if you have any better suggestions I'm all ears!
FWIW I have learned a ton for free watching tons of online videos & reading however there are some things or areas I feel I would be better served by having a mentor or getting more education with. Also as things can rapidly change. Think it would be good to have instant education on how to handle any major changes.
So here's my list;
- AMS (Amazing Selling Machine). Unfortunately they are not currently taking new students. I'm on an email waiting list but not sure when they will open up again. A spendy option but clearly has a mass following.
- Amazing.com, from the same people they have a tutorial platform that you can access for under $100 a month, $65 if you pay for the whole year at once. This looks good too, lots of different ways to learn to sell online here. I'm just not sure if this platform offers any sort of mentorship during times when you may need some Xtra help.
- Brand Builder Bootcamp by Ryan Daniel Moran from FreedomFastlane. com. I've learned a ton from his free vids & podcasts & I love his energy. I can't find 1 bad review for any of his products however I can't find any positive ones either outside of his own website. This is also a spendy option.

Do you have any opinions about these options, good or bad? Do you think there is a better option? I was kinda surprised that I didn't see more info about selling on AMZN or learning programs to sell there or eventually your own e-comm store. Maybe I didn't look in the right spots here, I dunno.

Anyhow thank you so much for taking the time to read thru this & for your reply. I really appreciate your experience & opinions.

Have a great day!

    Hello,

I have sold on Amazon for about 14 months. I know all of the courses you spoke of. AMS and Ryan are super star marketers that is for sure. I doubt their course will lead up to the value. There is plenty of info for free online. You just have to be patient and look for it. The Amazing seller is a good free source, but I think they're all full of shit to be honest. The real problem with selling on Amazon is China and having to compete with them directly. You will compete directly with factories because there are no import tariffs that are substantial enough to stop them. Now that they have figured it out, it is very difficult. The other problem with competing with the Chinese is their culture. In their culture, if they're not cheating, they're not trying. My neighbor is Chinese and she explained this principle to me. Where this comes into play is, they are definitely manipulating Amazon's search, they don't follow the rules for photos, ad copy or anything else. If they lose there account, they simply open another one and Jeff Bezos doesn't care as long as they keep making him money.
Another problem with Amazon is that the fees are way too high. The paid advertising is very competitive and there is no way to rank your product like before with giveaways, but that doesn't stop the Chinese. They clearly have a list of Chinese buyers that are glad to leave 5 star reviews, it's so obvious. At the end of the day, on Amazon you are not building a business because the customers are not yours, but they are Amazon's. You are not allowed to contact them any more via phone, and most have opted out of receiving an email from 3rd party sellers on their message system.
So, after a year of spinning my wheels, I am moving out of Amazon. It did help me get into the online business, and for that I am grateful as I may never had the courage if it weren't for them and those terrific internet marketers you mentioned. My goal was to never stay just on Amazon, I wanted to create my own e comm website. I did it, and you can too. I attended my local Meetup for wordpress, read a lot here and watched many Youtube videos. My next task is to round up people to come to my store. It is stocked with physical product that I have in hand so we are almost ready to go. I am certain that selling from my own site will be more pleasant and profitable then my time with Amazon and I won't have to hold my breath worrying about getting suspended by them.
Which ever way you go, believe it is already yours and you will have it.

    Best wishes

      Hello!

Thank you so very much for your reply, I truly appreciate it! I've been watching YT videos for months, reading tons online & it seems there is so much regurgitated info out there I begin to get frustrated.
My issue is 1, I'm new to selling on AMZN or having my own ecomm store & things seem to change so fast it's hard to keep up with the good things to do & what not to bother with anymore.
Yes both ASM & Ryan are spendy, I guess I just like that they seem so ontop of what's happening & if one of their members has trouble somewhere they have mentors to help. I'm not totally naive to selling online but in some areas like FB ads or other steps one needs to do to make their store a success, is where I think I may need some help. I also want to make sure I'm choosing the right product to start & so on.
Have you found any of the programs like Jungle Scout, Longtail Pro or the like helpful in choosing products, listing w/appropriate keywords, etc? It seems everyone has the "latest & greatest" program that they say is a must to help your business in one way or another.....

Anyhow thank you again for your reply. I'd love to know how things are going for you as you progress, keep me posted. I wish you the best of luck!

        Hey,
My best advice, stay away from Ryan and ASM. When it looks too good to be true, it probably is. Scott Voelker gives out enough for you to figure out how to do it and it's free.
I have had a service business for 24 years and never learned how to market. Until recently, facebook wasn't at my disposal until I had already been around for over a decade in 2 separate industries. I never wanted to learn facebook as I never signed up. Yea, I know, I'm one of the few. But I finally have signed up and have done some ads on their so my feet are wet. It's my mission to leave amazon once I sell through my remaining stock. I sell a bundle of the top 3 items in my category. I usually double my money on adspend in profit, but I only take away $6.00 per bundle and that is with me being the only seller. $6.00 is not enough because it is very labor intensive to shrink wrap them, label them and send them to Amazon. It's very hard to compete directly with factories. They have the game rigged. They sell their items for less than the true value and are reimbursed by the Chinese Government for each unit sent to the US. Since the Chinese government doesn't subsidize you, it is impossible for you to compete selling the same item with a different package. People don't care if you spent tons of hours making a beautiful box, they want their Chinese crap cheap period end of story. Since that is the case, and since the Chinese will charge you a lot for you to change the product they are making, the game is stacked against you. It is definitely better to sell where there is less competition. Even better, try to find a way to sell something made in the USA. It can be done, I have done it. You will run into the same problems you would with an overseas manufacturer, only they're easier to talk to.
Sign up at your local Wordpress meetup and step out of your comfort zone. I did this, and my knowlege of computers a year ago when I began with Amazon was very minimal. I have created 3 websites and one to completion that has a few sales. I have not done any adpend on it yet as I am selling off my merch on Amazon. So I expect it to be better all around on my website. Just the freedom you have to make it the way you want it is so much more worth the extra effort.
Which ever way you choose best of luck

I strongly recommend Jim Cockrum's Proven Amazon Course. This is how I began as a successful Amazon seller. Jim's course is very comprehensive, covering many many topic. It is sort of a cllection of various courses. It is also expanding all the time as he routinely adds new and valuable content. There is also an extremely helpful forum where you can get your questions answered by experienced AMZ sellers.

The course is very reasonably priced but I have heard they plan to raise the price soon.

@valencia99 has a viewpoint based on selling what everyone else is selling on Amazon, but there are thousands of people successfully making good money on Amazon and they don't care about the competition from Chinese vendors.

The big problems encountered by sellers such as valencia99 are:
    • They try to compete on "hot selling" items, with hundreds or even thousands of competitors.
    • They buy from the thousands of traders masquerading as manufacturers on sites such as Alibaba.
The really successful sellers on Amazon are private labeling. Some do it quite successfully just using their own label to differentiate, but others use brilliant labeling such as I teach in my new book on the subject, and by doing so they create a great brand. This can lead to repeat business and word of mouth advertising.

It is important to avoid paying too much for the products and the best starting point for that is to only deal with genuine manufacturers. It is also worth learning how to be sure you really are getting the best price.

With experience in importing from China since 1987 I am able to teach those things to my students.

    Walter,

That was a lot of assumptions on your part only to work in your plug for a new book. Well done.

#1. If you choose a product with few sellers, almost always that is because of low demand. It pays no dividends to sit on product at the FBA warehouse, their rent is too high, especially October - January. Therefore, you have to go after products that have consistent demand that is demonstrated and verified over a period of time. This is precisely where you will but heads with the Chinese.

#2. I dealt directly with manufacturers. I don't agree that you cannot find manufacturers on Alibaba. I bought your book and your "secret website" is no secret and no better than Alibaba, just a competitor. You can spot traders from a mile away, you just need a few days doing research to develop an eye for them.

#3 I private label our products. Big deal? It will not separate you from the Chinese, nor will your perfectly written copyright. Improving the product, which will cost a substantial investment on most products, is the only way to differentiate, and then they'll just copy your idea and your back to square 1 again.

At the end of the day, if Chinese manufacturers and traders are going to compete with you, you will lose every time because they have the advantage of cheaper costs and that any American can obtain. The game is up, they have figured it out that they no longer need us to move there product.

I have no book to sell, no course to teach. I just call it as I see it and this is my opinion. I am sure of 1 thing though, if I were doing great selling on Amazon or anywhere else for that matter, I don't think I would have reason or time to create a course or a book on how to do it. I'm just sayin.

I was not criticizing you, simply commenting on the issues you raised. There are many people who complain about being unable to compete on Amazon and that's not only competing against Chinese sellers.

From my experience it seems that most of these try to sell hot selling products. I also know that there are many thousands of people who are successfully competing on Amazon. Some sell hot selling items, but the most successful ones I know steer clear of them.

I didn't say you can't find real manufacturers on Alibaba, just that it's difficult for newbies to know how to tell. Congratulations if you have worked out how to do it, but I know from the many sad stories that people have told me when they ask for help, that most people can't tell. If it was as easy as you say, I would not have so many hundreds of testimonials from my book buyers who have found it so helpful.

I don't have any "secret" site as you describe it, but my preferred site is vastly better than Alibaba when it comes to verification procedures and reliably identifying who is a genuine manufacturer.

Do you have the latest edition of my book? If not, contact my support team with your purchase details for a free download.

Regarding #3 I made no mention of improving products, but there are plenty of ways to do that without Chinese suppliers knowing about it until you have become well established with a loyal customer base.

Sorry to hear that you are not doing well on Amazon. I don't import anything since my retirement, and I don't teach how to sell on Amazon. I just teach how to safely source products from genuine manufacturers, and import them the easy way, so your closing comment must apply to someone else.

I am not even in the game but looking to sell a product I design online.

Do all these answers/this thread applies to buying and flipping products from China/Alibaba or original product made in the USA or both?

Im curious how likely the Chinese may see my product on Amazon and decided to mimic?

It might take a long time and will only happen if your product becomes a big seller.

Even then, Chinese copiers usually tend to go down spec, reducing the quality in order to reduce their cost.

If you have established yourself and gained a good reputation, you will usually be able to beat off any competition. Don't fall into the trap of fighting off copiers by reducing your price. Your higher price will be perceived by customers as an indicator of quality.

To take advantage of that you should emphasise the quality and the Made In America badge.

Something very often overlooked is the immense value of choosing the right brand name, label type, and packaging. All of these can act as silent sales staff for you.

I have been teaching people who have no design skills how to create and source labels to make a GREAT brand. Don't just slap on a label. Think what a label is intended to do, otherwise you are throwing away a potential winning strategy.

Labels can make or break your business. Learn how to win the battle for attention online or on the shelves.
