For those of you that are involved in both affiliate marketing and ecommerce... are your promotion and marketing strategies the same? If you take a different approach for these models, I'd love to hear it.

When you are talking about ecommerce, are your referring to ecommerce stores where you stock or dropship physical products? Or are you referring to simple shopping cart sales (eg: selling an ebook)?

The only difference for me is that with affiliate marketing, I write a legit
review of the product and offer my own bonuses in order to distinguish me
    from the rest.

With affiliate marketing, the more you give the prospect, over and above
what other affiliates give, the more sales you will make...providing everything
else being equal such as your methods of traffic generation, money spent
    on ads and so on.

When I did e-commerce, paid advertising accounted for 50% of our sales and I spent up to $5000 per month. This was mainly through PPC and also a bit through affiliate sales.

As an affiliate, it is now virtually 100% by SEO. It is very difficult to find a program that could be profitable with PPC. For example, our shop used to carry a lot of products that was also sold by Newegg.com Our typical profit would be 25-50% of the price of the order, whereas Newegg will only give 1% to their affiliates!

Yeah, it seems like PPC has to be involved for ecommerce. Are the free methods not enough to generate substantial traffic and sales?

If you bust your butt in SEO it will pay off, thats where I put most of my focus when it comes to Ecommerce

But PPC will always drive immediate sales on physical products, just really tough sometimes when the affiliate pay get squashed.

SEO is tough when you are selling 2000+ products. At least when you're trying to compete with well established sites/companies.

For example... how can a new sporting goods ecommerce site compete with a site like dick's sporting goods or sports authority, etc?
