Can Wordpres work for Small eCommerce Site?

Friend of mine wants me to help her put up a website to showcase and sell some of her custom art. Probably no more than 10 - 20 items for sale at any time.

She also wants to promote herself, and some local classes she offers, and eventually an art instruction eBook (which she's working on at my suggestion.)

I can see how a Wordpress blog would work well for the second part of her list, but I'm not sure if it's the right choice for the physical product selling side.

Anyone using Wordpress to sell physical products? Any themes or plugins you can recommend?

Thanks!

Oh yeah, I'm absolutely certain there are ecommerce plugins...unfortunately I've not worked with any so I don't know what to suggest to you. But I'm sure someone who knows will chime in...

    It, probably, could.

There are quite a number of themes that will help you to show a kind of portfolio/gallery (think of Snapshot at Woo, for example).

Now, having individual custom items... you/she will have to create a paypal button for each of them with all the necessary fields for shipping (address etc.).

The courses and the ebook would have their own Page.

These were my first thoughts... others may have better ideas.

Yes it can be. There is an ecommerce plugin for word press. Matter of fact, it might be the one above that I'm thinking of.

If you don't want to go that route, you can always have a theme created, and then use the shopping cart plugin.

You can modify any template you like to use with wordpress. There is no limit and you do not have to have a blog look and feel. Wordpress is a cms and yes it is mostly used for blogs but that does not mean you have to have a blog with it.

I created a Amazon plugin and as I liked the ecommerce look much better then a basic blog setup I also created a ecommerce template.
It's used for instance here BMX FREESTYLE BIKE | Large Selection Plus Low Prices...

You can pick any ecommerce template at for instance templatemonster.com and ask somebody to modify it. I think you will find someone willing to do that for a low fee in the service section or at places like getafreelancer.com

Yes. I think wordpress would be the easiest way to set up a simple e-commerce website. I helped a friend set one up.

Yes, Etsy will provide a sidebar widget and let me tell you...having an Etsy shop and using IM techniques to drive traffic to the Etsy site can be UNBELIEVABLY profitable.

Yes I've seen people do it effectively using wordpress.

Remember that wordpress is just the site platform.

Also if your friend is selling custom art then trying to take payment online may not be the most effective way to do it if the price of the pieces is substantial at all.

It may be smarter to just list and describe the pieces and then have them contact the artist or the dealer as a call to action.

When people are laying down a lot of money they will usually want some real contact with a live person first.

      Kindest regards,

aside from the e-commerce side of things, the Wordpress platform will work exceptionally well for local search to showcase her classes as well as the gallery.

I love wordpress.....highly customizable, great for attracting traffic....and easily changed.

Check with the hosting provider she's using for ideas on how to set up a store site (there are some free options). Maybe you can simply create a two-part domain with the store on one platform and the blog/information section on the WordPress platform.

Wordpress works extremely well for an ecommerce site if you have the right theme. You should seriously look into the Builder Theme from iThemes.

It uses widgets extensively which would be good for putting her paintings in each widget. It's EZ to style the widgets and they have a widget content module with a WYSIWYG editor. This would allow your artist friend to switch out her paintings without your help.

And each page can have a different layout so one page could show thumbnails of her paintings and each graphic could have a hyperlink to another page with a larger painting. The buy now ecommerce button could be put on this page.

      Hope this helps,

I've used two plugins: wp-e-commerce, and Ecwid.

wp-e-commerce is great if you're only selling on one site. It has great SEO, and everything works as intended. One downside: it's somewhat fragile. Read the upgrade notes, and follow the recommended process for upgrades. If you just click "upgrade automatically", sometimes things break.

Ecwid is great if you're hosting a store on multiple sites. It integrates into Facebook, Wordpress, or any webpage really. It's all Ajax, but it's fast. Down side: The SEO *sucks*. The title and description are the same for every product page.

Both products can submit automatically to Google Base, allowing your products to show up in Google Shopping. Ecwid requires a 3rd party script - search it out, you'll probably find my site, as I wrote it.

If you choose one of these, let me know, and I'll help you as I can.

You should check out WooThemes. There are a few in particular that would go really well with the kind of website that you want.

In my opinion, you should take a look at these WooCommerce themes.
