Separate Paypal Acct. for ecommerce?

When using Paypal for the payment processor for an ecommerce site, should I sign up for an account apart from my personal account? Will Paypal allow two accounts? My main concern is that I work online and my pay goes into Paypal automatically. I have a fear of using the same account for ecommerce and it being frozen for any reason. Then my pay from my online work would not be available. Any thoughts? Thanks.

PayPal does not allow two accounts at all! Do not do that!

I would highly recommend opening up a different account though, signing up with a different name and confirming the account with a prepaid debit card. The reason for this is that PayPal is probably one of the most unreliable payment processing providers around. They limit and close accounts left and right and are absolutely horrible when it comes to customer support. So if you have to work with them, open up a couple of accounts on different names and never, ever, link them back to your original account.

The name of the book escapes me right now, but there was one dealing with this topic, I might post it up if I remember.

You are allowed to have two accounts with PayPal - one personal and the other either Premier or Business. That may or may not protect you, however, because sometimes they will freeze both.

Opening other accounts in other names, etc, is completely against their TOS and if you get caught, you will almost certainly lose everything. Not a good idea.

As long as you are following their TOS and keeping in touch with them when there might be sudden changes, you should be fine.

Your wrong answers displays a total lack of knowledge about paypal rules.

First you give a wrong answer - and then compound it by advising someone to violate the paypal terms. No wonder some people have trouble using paypal - they don't bother to read the TOS or understand how paypal works.

Yes, you can have two accounts - and that is clearly stated on Paypal's site.

Paypal does allow two accounts: of course, one is personal and one is for business. I have two at the moment.

But Paypal doesn't allow you to have two accounts that are the same grade. Of course, your business is allowed to have an account.

Um, this is so wrong on more than one note.

Anyway, Paypal does allow you to have a "personal" and a "business" account.

Do not sign up with a fake name. Use your real name for your personal account, and a business name for a business account.

You can do this very inexpensively by getting a trade name at your local town hall or gov facility, and take the trade name card to open a business banking account.

Please accept my apologies everybody, I didn't really comprehend the question... I thought OP was talking about 2 personal accounts. Yeah, sorry about that OP, PayPal does allow one personal and one business account.

Now in regards to opening accounts on a fake name, PayPal's TOS, etc. I still stand by my original suggestion, if you do everything right and don't do stupid stuff (like linking one of your "fake" accounts to your main account) PayPal will never know (again, do not do this if you have no clue what you are actually doing). PayPal's TOS is a bad joke, they don't even give a heck about it. There is no better protection against PayPal then dealing from a couple of accounts.

Trust me, my experience comes from dealing on eBay (for a couple of years) and dealing with customers complaining about perfectly fine goods, PayPal freezing the money to "clear up the situation" and the not responding to my e-mails.

Remember this, if you deal with PayPal, you will get burnt at one point of time!

So, just because you don't agree with a TOS makes is "ok" to make up your own rules?

Everyone who has a Paypal account will get burnt?

Yeah avenuegirl, amazing isn't it? How one company can continue to charge you for every transaction made and then freeze your money for 6 month or close you account without warning, for and I quote here:

PayPal, at its sole discretion, reserves the right to close an account at any time for any reason, including but not limited to a violation of this Agreement, upon notice to the User and payment to the User of any unrestricted funds held in custody. PayPal, at its sole discretion, also reserves the right to periodically retrieve and review a business and / or consumer credit report for any account, and reserves the right to close an account based on information obtained during this credit review process.
"WoW, Just WoW" indeed. Anyhow, I ain't got no time for this "white knight" nonsense. I was just stating my opinion on PayPal, no reason to get all upset about it. Don't like it, don't use it simple as that.

          Promise?

You've given advice that, if someone were to actually follow it, would cause them severe financial difficulty.

Whatever the reason, you obviously do not even comprehend the anti-fraud mechanisms PayPal has in place. Do you think they don't know and are on the lookout for people who try to do exactly what you're advocating?

Oh, sorry. Since you're "out of here!" I should be addressing this to people who read the thread and might actually try to follow that advice.

Yes, or use your original account as a business account, and start a fresh one for the personal stuff.

This way you have an already established reputation which will work to your benefit.

    You are allowed three accounts.

    1. A personal account
    2. A premier or business account
    3. A micro account

The micro account is good for prices under 12.00 as the fees are less. It can be a tad of a pain to verify if you don't have extra checking accounts.

Not sure if this is the answer you're ultimately looking for because your fear is Paypal freezing all your accounts but...

You can set up your Paypal to have many (child) accounts under one (parent) account. This would work for someone who wanted to use Paypal for their many, different online businesses, for example. You'd be able to keep your PayPal identities congruent w/ each business identity but monies from all accounts would still really be under one account.
