How to Get Started in Drop Shipping? Based in Australia

Hi there,

I'm based in Australia and have a very strong interest in setting up some e-commerce stores with drop shipping. It's the only way I want to do it. Of course I would just start with one store first.

I 100% understand the importance of selecting the right market.

However, right now I'm also a bit lost where to get started.

So:
1) Are there any great forum you would suggest?
2) Any other resources you would suggest
3) Any great resources on the warrior forum you can suggest?
4) Any other general tips you can provide?

I must admit I don't find many people talking on the warrior forum much about e-commerce in general. For me it seeks like a great investment long term (if you can get it right) with the way Google is headed.

Any thoughts would much be appreciated!

Thanks

One of this map is choosing place for our dropship bussiness, we can use marketplace ( ebay, bonanza, etc) or we build online store. Another one is strategy for advertising, we can use free traffic like google product search, the find or we use paid advertising like bizrate.
There are many guide about how to start dropshipping bussiness, but the most important is take action asap.

Check out Wholesale Suppliers Directory - eBay Product Sourcing | SaleHoo (no affil.)

They're based out of New Zealand, if I'm not mistaken, and have a forum and directory of wholesalers (including many drop shippers). I think you'll find they can answer a lot of your questions over there. I'm a member myself.

    Cheers,

Drop shipping in Australia is very different from drop shipping overseas (particularly in the US)...it simply isn't as 'big' here as it is in some overseas countries.

I honestly wouldn't spend any money on any of the so called drop shipper databases for Australian drop shippers. In general, you'll either find companies listed that...
      1. Drop ship to Australia but aren't based in Australia.
      2. Australian companies that do offer to drop ship, but 99% of the time you'll find their prices are too high to leave much of a profit for you.
If you really want to start a profitable drop shipping biz in Australia, I'd suggest 1 of 2 things.
      1. Contact Australian wholesalers (business that are actually based in Australia) that don't advertise themselves as drop shippers & see if they'd be willing to drop ship for you.

Though some will say no, you might be surprised with those that say yes. They'll usually end up drop shipping products for you for a much better price than the companies that actually advertise themselves as drop shippers. I would however suggest that you try to buy a few small orders (wholesale) from them first to build a relationship with them, so you're not just someone walking in off the street who they don't know - you'll have a much better chance of a positive response.

      2. Build a website that's targeted to the US market, then use US drop shippers to supply the products.

Obviously with the cost of shipping, you wouldn't want to use a US drop shipper to supply Australian customers, but there's nothing stopping you selling to the US market even though you're based in Australia.
      Cheers

        I agree with Rachel,

I did some dropshipping via ebay a couple of years ago (in Australia) I started off with Chinese dropshippers, which surprisingly, I had no problems with.
Then I had an idea for something a bit different, and approached an Aussie company (by email) and they were happy to offer me wholesale pricing and to ship directly to my customers.
I did this for a while, but then I guess the novelty wore off, and I stopped doing it. It was more a hobby for me than a business

      Hi Dave,

Actually yes I've come across your website before - it looks great and I'm using.

That's I question I have for you actually - the Australian market (sure you would realize) is so much smaller than the U.S market but that can be an advantage in terms of less competition too.

Anyway someone else in this thread raised it - how hard would it be for me (being based in Australia) to secure a u.s dropshipper and go after the u.s market? My concern there is around customer service though with the big time difference.

Do you know of anyone else doing this? Do you advise against it?

      Thanks

You can be anywhere in the world and make your site appear as if it based in the U.S. and cater to the U.S. market.

The next step would be to search the internet for a reasonably priced dropshipper

@ BillyDeason - A handful of our members are actually marketing to the Australia market, but most have set up US businesses and are marketing to the US. We have free info about how to set up a US business, but we also offer a "hands free" set service at MyUSbusiness.com. That premium service can also assist you with setting up a US bank account & US merchant account.

Thanks Dave - The article link was not working. Yes unfortunately I'm not that blessed with money at the moment to be able to afford the costs of setting up a US bank account & us merchant account. So I might need to concentrate on the Australian market to begin. I'm interested in the U.S market because of the size but the customer service (in terms of large time difference) concerns me the most. People calling during the middle of the night? I haven't gone through your course but I'm pretty sure you guys look after customer service unless I'm mistaken.

      Thx

I've never really heard much good about drop shipping but there are certainly times where things work out for the best. If you have a niche in mind have you thought about perhaps contacting a supplier directly?

That's odd, all 3 of the links in my previous post are working fine on my end. Try them again, maybe it was a temporary server issue or something..

Focusing on your home market for your first store is a really good idea actually. It gets you familiar with the whole process and prepared to take on bigger markets/challenges.

Regarding phone calls and customer service: we encourage people to have an 800 # and take calls because it increases buyer confidence (and therefore your conversion rate) but it's not required. Right now we have a virtual assistant that we pay less than $1,000 a month to handle all customer service for all stores. She only handles customer service via live chat and email right now, so we don't currently even follow our own advice!

If I were you I would find a niche in your home country and build a store around that. Use the profits from your first website to pay for all growth down the road!

Keep in mind, just because supplier in Australia don't know what dropshipping is doesn't mean they won't do it. If you approach it the right way you can usually talk them into it. After all, they are at risk if you are paying them wholesale for each order before it even leaves their warehouse!

Yes, I think that's the best way to start. I guess it's like someone starting out in IM you just want to get the first sale. Although I'm interested in the U.S at a later point because I know of markets where it would work there but not here.

Do you still offer the service of securing a supplier in the U.S? If so let me know on the cost (for down the track).

I actually came across your site about 18 months ago now and was very intrigued at the time...however I choose to pursue offline marketing but now I return...it's a fantastic resource.

I've always had a bunch of projects on my list that I never get to...but partic after the Panda update I keep thinking ecommerce...most of my clients have ecommerce stores too...

and I know about all the stuff like unique product descriptions etc
      conversions
      marketing etc...

but I guess I was scared off...because I'm also trying to create more lifestyle not less! so I'm a bit wary of workload...I agree though it's all in the choice of markets..low maintenance markets with high cashflow per cleared sale

Thanks for all your advice. Also...the choice of ecommerce platform is crucial for me so will take a look at your platform...I always people say magento this and magento that is best for SEO...I definitely want something great for SEO no question...each page customizable... but I'm a marketer and that's my strength and not on the technical side...so needs to be user friendly!

      Thanks again

    Hi

I have used eCommerce packages for over 5 years and throughout this time ive ran online stores doing drop shipping around the UK and throughout EU. I find it a great way to run a business. Your basically the middle man advertising the suppliers products without the hassle of packing and delivering the goods. Although i also have a business now where i create the products so i dont mind packaging and shipping them.

I would check what they send out in the package because at first my drop ship supplier years ago was including their own advertising materials and my customer weren't returning to my website but going directly to the drop shipper so i was loosing custom.

You need to have a great business relationship, make sure you check and know their stock levels also with the products your selling so you dont need to action refunds etc.

i dont know many forums to be honest i use UKBF which is helpful even though your based in Australia theres still some helpful tips regarding eCommerce.

You seem to know everything about eCommerce. I think its a great package to use for running online businesses and will use them always

OK you sound very experienced can we please be partners :-) I lived in the UK for number of years so also know the market...

I would check what they send out in the package because at first my drop ship supplier years ago was including their own advertising materials and my customer weren't returning to my website but going directly to the drop shipper so i was loosing custom. When you say this...would you just place a prelim order with them before any contact? Also I guess you never really know if they were to start doing this down the track...but guess that's where relationship comes in...actually that's put another thought into my head now...I could imagine some dropshippers doing that to get more business! I guess you get friends etc to place an order down the track and test them out

You need to have a great business relationship, make sure you check and know their stock levels also with the products your selling so you dont need to action refunds etc. OK Agree

I wouldn't say everything..at the moment it's all theory in any case...researching, identifying the market and marketing is my strength but the development side I will need help there.
