Bit overwhelmed by Ecommerce Marketing

I've partnered with a medical retailer and I'm doing their online marketing. I work on a commission basis. Over the past few months, I have been writing unique content to replace their manufacturer's canned copy. I also have someone building links to the site. I'm pretty much finished with replacing the most important descriptions, although I want to add more content to the key products we will be targeting in SEO.

My problem is, there are +4000 products and I feel a bit overwhelmed. I realize there are a ton of different things I can do, but to be effective, I need to focus on a few tasks so I don't spread myself too thin.

My relationship with this medical retailer is quite interesting. I have no salary or base pay. Instead I make 50% of the profits on sales I bring in through my efforts (I am protected by contract so they can't just kick me out without compensation).

I'm making enough in commissions now to allocate a small budget for outsourcing, which hopefully can accelerate our results. However, I'm having trouble figuring out what I should be focusing on and where I should allocate this budget.

Any advice is greatly appreciated

  • First, congrats on your success so far.

Second, somebody is going to suggest outsourcing product descriptions to Fiverr. Don't be tempted. Nobody there is going to do an adequate job for you for $5. I say this as a person who is both expert in writing product descriptions and has done business on Fiverr.

The only thing I think would help would be to contact our friends TryBPO. They're on this forum and they are experts in Philippine outsourcing. They may have staff who can do product descriptions.

You don't have enough posts yet to do a PM but you can contact Joe or Justin through their website:

I agree with fluffy , do not be tempted , Although you probably feel like your time is better spent elsewhere i think you need to be the one to put the products up there as it needs to marry your unique content.

I am assuming that product , numbers , descriptions are all on a spread sheet , i would suggest beefing it up and then using WP-commerce , to get your product list to your site , tie it up with your payment mechanisim and then all you will need to do is run througth your store and check each SKU and description.

I would not outsource any sort of content for medical supplies. This content needs to come from someone who has a vital understanding of the use of these products in order to write copy that converts. You understand the problems associated with the product need. Not everyone will, and it will affect you copy and your commissions. Focus your efforts on high volume and high margin products first. Then prioritize from there. Look at the margins/commissions on diabetic supplies and wound care supplies (high volume). Ostomy supplies is another that comes to mind.

You will get 80% of your commissions from 20% of your sales. Find your 20% and you are good to go.

      Nice and cozy arrangement!

I am also looking for some partners like yours, who can totally outsource their Online Marketing tasks to some 'professional' like me

Anyways, coming back to your question about Online Marketing for an eCommerce site, that too in health niche.. let me share some of my experiences:

      a) First and foremost, lookout for a health blogger. If you are able to find one, who is capable of producing amazing heath related content, then you have hit a home. Not only you can arrange quality guest posts and press releases, but also the overall brand name will improve with good copy. I totally agree with George Lee, that good website content by someone who is an expert, is very important.

      b) Its good to outsource the link building campaigns, but, create the link building plan with your skills. Until and unless you do something unique and innovative, Google won't notice you. And the issue with outsourcing is that, maximum people will do what others do. You have to be creative and innovative with this whole link building game. And especially, as its a health related eCommerce site, things would be a bit interesting!

      c) I hope you have created an email list. If not, then immediately do so! As Seth godin say, built a tribe.. and then see magic happen. Encourage the daily visitors to your site to subscribe to your newsletter, and then offer something interesting every week. or every two weeks.. or every day! It all depends on the click open rates and stuff.

      d) All the best!

Figure out who your customer is and where they are coming from.
Then devise a plan to get more of them.
Then figure out which parts of the plan to hand to your outsourcer.
        Good Luck

      I love the 80-20 rule. It's so true! In my case it's a bit different, it's 90-10.

From experience, if you are advertising their brick and mortal location, how will you track what in store sales are coming for you?

That's quite a few products. There is a lot you can do, but I'm almost certain that you still have your best sellers among them. If you haven't already, analyze that data, and figure out which products have the highest profitability for you. I'd recommend focusing on a few selected products first and outsource your work. That way, you'll be able to know, from your familiarity with those sales, to have something to compare to.
