Hi there,

I have beeen asked to implement an eCommerce site by a new client using Wordpress....

I've conducted some research but the available options are quite overwhelming to say the least....

If you have had experience in implementing an open source eCommerce solution that you know works and is easy to work with, I would love your input....

Best regards

Greg

Why do you need open source ? Are you going to do additional programing ? Or do you mean Free ?

      Hey Elmar,

      Yes I mean "free"......

But I need a product that is robust....I don't want to start working with something and then find that I have to redo the work later on because the software is flaky...

      Regards

      Greg

    Hi Greg,

Try cart66 Lite it's a decent enough shopping cart and it's free. There are others out there of course.

    Cheers

I'm sure there's a free version of WP Commerce. It looks pretty stable and has all the basic features you need. The full version isn't much and the free version should have most the things you need to get started.

It appears that a product called OpenCart is receiving great reviews and rated in the Top 10....

See here: Open Source eCommerce Posts | Practical eCommerce

and the Home Page: OpenCart - Open Source Shopping Cart Solution

Anyone used this or know of someone who has?

    All help appreciated...

Another alternative beside OpenCart is Magento...

It's more powerful than Opencart, but the theme's price is more expensive.

You could see other ecommerce alternative through Themeforest. You could find your solution easily there.

Woocommerce is what I'm using but to do all you want it to do, the free version won't cut it. However, the needed addons for my project were reasonably priced.

Woocommerce was rated highly in the top 3 or 5 in all the sites I checked into.

Just bought WooCommerce for my plr store and it's dynamite. Got some great extensions for it also and I'm loving the ease of adding products and the layout

Take a look at Prestashop, its very complete and you can add some really great applications. Prestashop is free, you will need to pay if you want to add some applications, but all in all, its fine on its own.

Not a wordpress site, but interesting to look at.

WPcommerce is a good solid free product...

For $50 you can buy a "gold" cart which will give it ALL the functionality of any other paid solution.

          Good luck!

p.s. I am currently using WPcommerce on around a dozen sites with no issues.

I use Free Online Shopping Cart Software, Web Site Ecommerce Solutions and Systems for some sites. It has a free version but the paid version is only like $20 per month. It's very easy to use also. You just copy and paste the code from the shopping cart onto your WordPress page. I use an HTML embed code plugin so every page is done in WordPress and then the HTML embed code plugin adds the buy or add to cart button.

I also use WordPress eStore Plugin - Complete solution to sell digital products from your wordpress blog securely | Tips and Tricks . It's also a very easy solution and a one time fee.

Both of these work with physical items as well as digital products.

Having built a few ecommerce sites with WordPress and reviewing every single plugin/theme out there the most important things are ease of use and making sure it truly fits your needs.

First, what is your product? Is it digital or physical goods? Do you need to be able to keep track of item inventory? Will you be selling multiple variations of products? If digital products, will you need integration with things like Amazon S3 (which I recommend for large file sizes). All of these things should factor into what shopping cart plugin you decide on.

That being said, my favorite WordPress plugin is Jigoshop and there are a lot of nice themes that go with it and additional modules can be purchased if need be.
