    That's the million dollar question, and if you contact a marketing/SEO company make sure you get some solid evidence of their references because 99% of them have no idea on how to market actual eCommerce websites and their items.

      Yeah, make sure they really know their stuff.

      And please don't try to go into this business/market with no marketing budget, as that plays 99% of the game for e-commerce.

    Basics of the SEO apply to all websites, whether they are eCommerce or not.

    But on top of that, it really depends on what kind of products/services that you're selling.

      It seems to me that eCommerce sites have some unique SEO challenges.
      For example, in a highly competitive market you need to rely more on SEM over SEO.
      The reason I say that is Google Shopping and Adwords can take up most of the page one real estate for competitive markets. Even if you manage to get your product links on page one, buyers will need to scroll past all the pretty Google Shopping images and Google images and look away from Adwords add to find your products.
