For those of you with successful e-commerce stores, what's your conversion rate to sale?

I read that it's 1/100. Hope that's not the case.

It depends on the product you are selling. If it's unique and in demand, you will have a great conversion rate. 1/12 or even better.

However, if your product is electronics or something that hundreds or thousands of dealers are selling, then 1/100 may be a good conversion rate.

I spent $3,000 on Google and Bing ads over a 6 month period promoting products that were in a small niche and still couldn't break even. It is not an easy task. Or, I should say, it hasn't been easy for me.

      What he said....

There are too many variables to answer this question... I own sites that convert 1/10 visitors and sites that convert 1/500.

One of the biggest variables in probably pricing. The sites of mine that convert at the lowest rates are the ones that have an average order price of $2k+. If the customer needs time to think about their purchase decision and comparison shop your conversion rates will be lower.

Your traffic sources are also another huge determining factor. If you are using low quality traffic generation methods you can expect a low quality conversion rate.

Actually, the "industry standard" is .5% - This means 1 out of 200 visitors will convert to a sale.

However, this is not really a conversion rate you should factor into something like a business plan. I know people who have and converted below this, and people have thrown up niche sites that do 5% easily.

Conversation rates rely on so many variables, that some "average rate" is almost pointless.
