slider/banner best practices question

Hey everyone!

I have a basic ecommerce store with about 100 products and 5 categories. On the home page, there is an image slider.

I am just wondering what best practices are for ecommerce image sliders for maximizing conversions. e.g. In general, is it better to highlight a specific product? Or a benefit to shopping wth us (free shipping)? Or should I feature a product category? Except this seems redundant because product categories are the main items on navigation menu. Or just images?

    On my eCommerce stores I use my first slide to advertise whatever "limited time promotion" I am currently running. I then use the rest of them to promote popular manufacturers I sell for any my best selling products.... I use multiple product images and text on each slide and it has always worked well for me.

    One thing I've learned from banner ads is that I don't know anything.

    For that reason, and since I believe nobody can guess a winning banner; it's essential to rotate and split test.

    Create banners highlighting (in your opinion) the single best product in a category. then link it to the category, instead of that individual product.

    I'd avoid banners where you try to cram as many products from the category into a single banner, messy and confusing.

    For free shipping I'd have that as a badge overlayed on top of the slider (doesn't need a whole slide, but will be visible on every slide)
