A simple way to check if an ecommerce store would work in a niche is to search around and see if you can find someone else doing it successfully. You can also use the Google keyword tool to search for related keywords and if the estimated CPC is more than a few dollars then you can be sure that someone is making money from those keywords.

A great way to find a niche that will be profitable, is to look at things that you yourself buy. A niche that will always be in demand (pet supplies). I have cats and I buy them a new toy every week because it is so cute and they will play and allow me to work. Also look at how many of those tiny dogs wear clothes!

If your interests are sporting good, you know better than anybody what is hot right now, what people are clamoring to get, what things will always sell (athlete jerseys)

If you visit quite a few mobile e commerce sites, you will get an idea whether your niche will support your eCommerce site. Check on Google and carry out extensive research on your business niche. If you find any other person doing business using an eCommerce site in the same niche as you, then you may also do the same.

Don't aim too broad unless you have the capital for it. Drill it down and aim for a specific niche.

Existing paid traffic in the niche can be a sign of a profitable niche but at the end of the day you won't know until you start pushing traffic.
