What is the best way to pick a product or products to sell on an e-commerce site? I need to think more about this.

Is it best to sell one product or many?

It matters what type of ecommerce you're entering. Are you looking to start a store in a niche? Or are you looking to be a direct affiliate of a product?

As for how to pick the products; just find some other ecommerce stores in your niche and you'll already have a good list of products

Here are a few things to keep in mind.

Is it competitive? Will margins be high enough and is the market too saturated?

Does it look profitable? Get a price list and shipping costs. Find out what price point others are selling at. Can you make money after marketing (and other) expenses?

Is it viable? You might be able to be profitable but is the return worth the time? On a global market you are competing with countries where the cost of living may be much lower than your country so it may create a situation where its 'worth it' for them and not for you.

Are others making money on it? As mentioned by Ben a good indicator is the success of others.

Is it best to sell one product or many?
Do you mean one type of product, like a niche store? If yes, these niche stores are easier when starting out and can be very profitable. Eg. a store that just sells digital cameras.

If you are going less nichey like a store on 'electronics' then yes more products will generally sell more. Sorry I can't be more specific but it really does vary a lot depending on the industry and product.

I think it depends on what you are trying to sell. If you are selling drills on an ecommerce site dedicated to drills, I think it's best to have different types. If you are selling your latest novel, then you would want to focus on that one thing.
