It really depends on how competitive the keyword is, can you rank for it easily?

Searchers are becoming more savvy, so the traditional "Top spot gets 40% of clicks, 2nd spot gets.. etc" is starting to lose its ground, people are looking through the first few search results before making a decision which to click.

Depending on what you're ranking for, Google Authorship (the little thumbnail picture of you in the Snippet) is boosting CTR dramatically, even if you're in position 3 or 4... it adds a trust and authority factor to it vs. the other SER's.

Also look at the trends, since the 140 is an average taken over the previous 12 months, see when the majority of those searchers have been made.. if the boom for that keyword is NOW, then you might want to skip it for the time being and hit it in the summer time to be in prime position for it's boom period next year. If it's consistent, fly at it, if it's going to boom in the Spring, start optimizing now.

Lastly, with any SEO, I'd run Adwords FIRST, just to see how many impressions the ad gets, if in fact it's a keyword that converts... before spending all the time and/or money to rank for it, and finding out it's a dud.

    Good advice from Wilder.

A key thing mentioned is using Adwords to see if the keyword will convert. SEO takes time and money so you want to make sure it's going to be worth it.

Another thing to consider is how profitable your product/service is and how targeted the keyword is (is it a long tail keyword?). Really targeted keywords convert much higher than generic keywords.

If a sale is worth a lot of money and the conversion rate is good then optimising for a 140 search per month keyword would make a lot of sense.

You mean from your experience the Google keyword tool under reports the amount of traffic?
