SSL certificates, do i need to buy one for my online shop?

Hi,

A friend of mine recently told me that I should have an SSL certificate for my shop.

I have a registered business, an ABN (business rego) and I thought that would be enough. He even thinks that not having one could affect google ranking.

Does anyone know of any articles etc or how/ when to get a certificate?

Does it just mean that visitors may not have as much trust for my site or that their browsers may try and ban my site? Just curious as both the sites in my signature have dog treat shops and I have been running them for over a year and no one has mentioned it? THANKS!

    SSL certificate means, the connection to that website is secured and that you are connect to the store that claims to be who he is.

    If you own a store, any transaction you are making shall goes through a secure connection and the SSL is needed. It protect from sniffing your website.

      So the downside if i dont have one is that it is less secure and some shoppers may not shop on it? Even though all transactions are handled by a third party site? I take it then that I need to look up how to buy one for australia?

        Depends on how you're accepting payments. Paypal does not require it because their checkout process is secure.

        I have an WooCommerce site with authorize.net (DPM) extension that does not require a certificate because the Direct Post Method is already secure via authorize.net.

    All merchant accounts require vendors to have SSL certificate and offer secure connections during checkout process. I never heard of ssl certificates affect google ranking in anyway and as a matter of fact, my main store is on https domain for a year now and holds rankings for very competitive terms.

    If you are passing personal information, passwords etc, it's a good idea to have one.

    If you use basic paypal or google then all transactions are done off site and no ssl is needed however if you use paypal pro , advanced or any other onsite processor then you would need the ssl.

    It is very easy to get an SSL certificate through GoDaddy... If you purchased your domain there, it's even easier. Around $100/year. Look for promo codes online before buying anything from GoDaddy. You can usually save about 50%. Try: retailmenot.com, or just a simple google search for "godaddy promo code 2012". Hope this helps!

    I would say. YES. An ssl certificate is needed. Even though the transaction may be processed via paypal or another processor. Your clients are probably entering in personal information on your site.

    And if they are, then the site needs to be secure. Our payments are processed via paypal. But clients enter in personal info via the order form and client area. Those areas need to be secured and are.

    You can get ssl certificates pretty cheap and definitely worth getting.

    If you have an eCommerce store, it's good to have an SSL certificate, though if it's a very small shop and all of your payments are handled on a third party site than it's not the end of the world if you don't have one to start out. If you're really looking to build your business as well as reputation as a solid and reliable store, I would go ahead and make the purchase. It really is worth the $50-$100.

    If your website have contact us form and it contains or will contain field of sensitive information such as email id, pay pal, credit card information, and bank wire details, then you must have SSL Certificate on your website because it will encryption all the sensitive information while transacting on the web.

    Apart from this, if we see website in perspective of users trust and confidence, then SSL Certificate is one of the major core aspect in order to gain web users trust and confidence through traditional padlock and green address bar.

    The SSL cerificate may just be plus for your site and to raise trust in your store into your clients eyes, but in many cases, dependimg on payment methods used - it i not required.

    About the Google ranking and SSL - I have never heard of such a relation. I just have noticed that on some sites the normal pages "http" may have Google PR of lets say 3, but the pages that use SSL have a PR of 0.
