Of course that will happen but you should also have a much better conversion rate if you have chosen good keywords. Using broad match with ppc is usually a very bad idea. I think most people only use exact match and add many negative keywords too.

What's up with your guys usernames? Lol....

I didn't know that most people use exact matches.... I use broad matches and conversion is ok.

The problem with broad match is that quite often it turns what you think is a buyer's keyword into a more vague term which would obviously dramatically reduce conversion.

  • I use phrase matches until I have a VERY extensive and exhaustive list of negative keywords.

This is to make sure I'm VERY optimized in my target audience.

Once I'm sure that I'm very, very close in getting only targeted searches, then I switch to broad match --- but I still monitor DAILY my searches and add negative keywords just to make sure I'm getting more and more targeted traffic whilst getting the largest 'footprint' of searcheers.

How do you determine the negative keywords? Is it through what terms people are using to land on the site through the ads running?

The thing is with negative keywords, you need to wait for a good chunk of data to come in so you can analyze it and pick out the negative keywords. You could burn through thousands of dollars before you turn profit that way...

The way i picked negative keywords is I setup conversion tracking and a few months into my campaign, i sorted my keywords by price to conversion ratio and saw the most expensive ones that converted. I also looked at the ones with 0 conversions and sorted them by impressions/clicks... that gave me a list of keywords i pay for that did not convert. Funny thing is most of the time the negative keywords are competitor brands...

At least thas how I did it. But i only did it once in the last year lol.

Whats a good $ number per conversion?

  • Naw,

You don't need to pay 1000's for a list of negative keywords..

I used 7 search - ran it for a month, paid 100 bucks for a great list of negative keywords. BAM. Optimized

That list is very corollary to any ad campaign as well.

But doesn't that apply the same principle? You use broad match keywords and get more impressions and clicks, but then build up a huge list of negative keywords which, in effect, again reduces your impressions and clicks because you are blocking those impressions out.
