Is PayPal or Google Checkout acceptable way to accept pmts from business (doctors) clients?

Either way you will have some missed sales. If the script vendor will not do it, you should be able to get someone to modify the script to work with the missing payment, unless the script is obfuscated or encoded (zend guard or similar) which many people find objectionable for enough reasons that the subject of needs it's own thread.

I can't answer specifically but I know from experience having local business seo clients they often like to pay by cheque. It would really depend on an individual basis, why don't you just ask them what they prefer? Ideally you want to accept (or be able to if required) any type of payment they want to pay with assuming the contract would be worth the extra effort.

The charges for paypal and google checkout are too high.

It depends on which method of paypal integration. If it's paypal integration that works like a merchant account, that will be pretty transparent to the user (or should be). if it's regular paypal like most payments are, you are going to lose LOTS of sales.

If you can't use a normal merchant account (or it doesn't make sense to use one), and you have to use a 3rd party, I would consider using Amazon payments. Google is pretty trusted but a lot of people have never used it for checkout whereas a lot of people have ordered/purchased from amazon.

I dont think anyone can tell you what doctors are using to pay for the things they buy online as every single one of them is going to have their own way of paying. I would get the scripts modified as someone had mentioned. You can try freelancer website to see if anyone can help edit the script.

I think a great way to see what might be best received would be to poll a sample of your prospective clients. That way you'll know a) if there is a preference and if you need to dig deeper into building the functionality of one processor into both sites, and b) if you need to educate the clients as to what exactly Paypal and Google Checkout are. My experience working with some doctors/dentists is that they're pretty old school. You'd actually have better luck polling their staffers or admin people as they are the ones normally charged with "getting things done".

Fees are high no matter what processor you use more or less, so the key would be finding a preferred processor (you may have to go with 2...) and making it work whereby user has option.

And finally, if you're looking for another option we use 2checkout.com. It has all those features (including automated recurring billing) referenced by most folks above and like any good Credit Card provider, if you pay your bills on time and do a healthy amount of business with them, you can hit them up periodically and ask that they reduce your processing fees.

I am using Paypal Payments Advanced---is their a downside of using it. I can accept debit/credit cards, but I feel like people feel they must have a Paypal account. Should I get away from this?

I used to recommend 2Checkout but ever since my experience with them last week, I won't be recommending them any more.
