My host does not support SSL for add on domains?

If I install it on the cPanel where my add on domain is, will it cover not only the main domain but also all other add on domains on that account even though they will be sharing the same IP (since its a shared hosting account)?

You'd have to edit the httpd.conf file in oder to make this work. Most hosts will not do this. I'd recommend putting the domain that needs the SSL Cert on its own account with a dedicated IP.

What is the purpose for the SSL Certificate?

The purpose for the SSL is because I have applied for Paypal Pro which requires SSL certification.

At the moment I have Paypal standard.

I am with Bluehost. I believe Hostgator supports SSL across cpanel. I also have an account with Hostgator so I can move it there. I would prefer not open another account unless absolutely necessary both for costs reasons (since I already have 3 hosting accounts already) but also easier to manage fewer accounts.

If you're going to be having personal data stored on that account, I would most certainly recommend "not" using an addon domain. The problem with this is that an addon domain is shared with the main account. If site A is the addon collecting personal information, and site B is another addon domain that gets compromised, you now have a major security concern.

Does this mean if you eventually have 6 or 7 stores you need to open a hosting account for each?Aren't there hosting accounts that assign unique IPs to add on domain?

You'd be better off using a reseller account as opposed to addon domains.

To use an SSL Certificate, you need a dedicated IP. There's a right way to do this, and there's a sort of hack type way to do this. Editing the httpd file to allow an addon domain to use an SSL Cert/IP is not a "best practice" way.

The only thing you need an IP for is an SSL Certificate.

          Hi Anton543,

Generally speaking, you need to have a dedicated IP for each SSL certificate, most hosts can arrange to have multiple webspace, on dedicated IPs for each of you stores, all in the same hosting account. You may need to upgrade the hosting plan, and in some cases the host will charge for each dedicated IP address.

I recommend that you contact your host support and explain your needs to find out what your options are, as this will vary from host to host.

Here is what the host says,

'The free shared SSL can be for primary or any add on domains, but you must not have a dedicated IP or a purchased SSL for it to work.'

Will this free SSL be sufficient to provide the protection necessary?

The shared SSL will give an error (it will work) when users visit the site because it's not issued to "your" site. There will be a domain mismatch which will cause your visitors to get an error. It will still work how it's intended though.

Will this free SSL be sufficient to provide the protection necessary?
That depends - the SSL Certificate will provide an encrypted connection. The data that's being entered & stored on your site is only as secure as the servers you're being hosted on & as secure as the site itself.

Absolutely. SSL is SSL, certificates whether free or not is just for the customers to verify your identity. Technically a shared SSL is as good as a custom one for you.

But please understand that your URL will be a subdomain of the hosts domain name, something like https://secure.yourhost.com/~yoursite/ , instead of https://yoursite.com which might scare your customers. So I wont really advice using the free service for a payment processing page where customers enter their credit card info.

If your primary domain name is not using the SSL, you can ask the host to change the add on domain you want SSL on, to be the primary. Most hosts do this for a very small fee.

Otherwise, just get a new hosting account - hosting is anyway pretty cheap these days.

Thanks. That's a great idea. I will just ask them to change the main domain to the domain I want SSL protection for, especilaly considering I don't actually use my domain for any contnet. All my sites are add on domains on the account. By the way, where do I get the SSL logo to upload on tt he site footer. I know I can save from any image, butt maybe some sites provide the code for the logos like Paypal does for theirs.

If you want using SSL for your live website, you need:
    1. SSL Certificate (you can buy it about $12 - $400)
    2. Dedicated IP Address for your addon domain. Usually shared hosting is not come with dedicated IP Address, you can ask dedicated IP Address to your hosting provider and of course it's not free.
Usually I add the SSL from the WHM, I'm not sure if you can add it from CPanel. It's better if you contact your hosting provider to help you setting up the SSL.
