Need suggestion on Mobile ecommerce

Hello warriors.
I currenly own an OpenCart based ecommerce store using a template that I really like. The problem is that it is not mobile device (iPhone, iPad, etc.) friendly. As more and more people use their mobile devices to access the net and make purchases, I am thinking that I need to make some changes to my store to become more mobile device friendly.

The question is: Should I change my template to one of the newer mobile app/desktop friendly, or there is a way I can keep my current template and add another one for mobile device only?

I would appreciate any input/suggestions or link.

You can create a mobile website version or a native app, that would be separately from your desktop website. Reaching customers on the go is really very important nowadays. In case your homepage looks unattractive on mobile devices you can loose the significant part of your audience who access it from their smartphones or tablets.

  Thanks MobiDev. So assuming I want to have a separate mobile website, what I need to do? Should I duplicate my store in a mydomain/mobile/ directory with a mobile template?
  How I will redirect a mobile user to this site?

  Actually the previous is horrible advice. No offense but a separate mobile website might work for informational sites but it doesn't for ecommerce. You don't want to have to reload products into a new site and it all has to work with your check out mechanism. Check the extensions, modules and plugins that OpenCart has that will convert your site to Mobile when it detects a device. For example at first glance:

  I think you only really need it to be a mobile device from phones and maybe the 7 inch tablet devices but your normal site will work fine a regular iPad. This way its still check out, you are working with a single admin panel and not having to worry about maintaining two sites.
