There is a difference in buying a "turnkey" website and buying a "pre-built" website.

Turn key is most often when a company has its products pre-entered for you with your chance to use your own domain name. Problem is, you don't know how many other exact copies of that site are out there with just a name change. If you know how to make changes to the site to make yours unique, don't bother. Your site has to be substantially different and you would still be competing against others who have a "turn key" site.
But it can be a start, just that there are better ways to get started.

Buying a site already built usually entails "placeholder" images for products, allowing you to do the work of filling in the blanks of fake products in place. This is a good exercise for learning how a site might work.

Keep in mind that either situation is a leaning process. Neither are bad but more a stepping off place to get you started.

  • I am always wary of seeing pre-built websites on eBay - or any other venue.

You have to be very careful.

Many people will say 'BUY MY Page Rank 4 site!' It is soooo AWESOME! 400 bucks and it's yours!!!

And many people get suckered into this, but then they don't look at any back-end stats to see the TRUE value of the website.

    For instance.

I use SEMRUSH.com to see the search engine traffic history and rankings.
-This tells me if the website has any search engine traffic and if it has LOST or GAINED any in the recent past. Is the seller selling it because it just got sandboxed? Or is the seller selling it because it has no traffic? No results?

I use quantcast to see the DEMOGRAPHICS of the traffic and to see any changes in the demographics. This tells me if the traffic is conducive to the products offered.

I use MajesticSEO.com to see the backlink QUALITY... Are the backlinks just a bunch of spam? I want to see that they have good citation and trust flows. Also - I want to see they are from a lot of different references and not just 1 or 2 websites and that the backlinks are consistent over time.

I also like to use SEOQUAKE plugin to verify the PAGERANK Meta information, optimization, and domain quality/history/alexa rank/ etc.

    Basically - trust, but verify.

Don't drop money on a sales pitch.

I think everyone has some valid points here. Very hard to market prebuilt/turnkey websites. I however have bought one or two of these types of sites for my own businesses. I bought a turn-key print shop website and it has saved me a lot of money. I created business cards and flyers and marketed the site locally and am doing very well with it.

I think it just depends on what you are trying to use the sites for.

stay away from turnkey websites, hard to get good results even if you work hard on SEO, just too many identical copies out there...

Turnkey websites are not really profitable. Think about the duplicates out there. SEO is futile working on duplicate websites.
