Hi Everyone...

I am trying to decide which option to go with as far as setting up a ecommerce store. My concern is that I don't have alot of time to devote to a ecommerce store that is not hands off, and that would be my better option if it is an option as a newbie.

1) How much time does a Ebay owner who works his ebay store p/t & f/t put into his businesss.... and what Does A Ebay Store Owner Do Daily , Weekly , Monthly ?

2) How time intensive is running a ebay business , manage taking orders , packing, shipping products talking to customers... so if a new prospective new ebay store operator has little time to invest into a running a ebay store what would be the least amount of hours he / she would have to devote weekly, I only have maybe 5 hours a week to invest and that is a maybe and is it enough ...

3) Can one outsource order fullfillment with ebay and when can one do this and would one have to buy a lot of inventory to begin with and then ship some where to some order fulfillment company some where in US...

  • Okay - this is a very good question, and I'm not going to beat around the bush..

The SET UP is time consuming. It's not like you can push a button and WHAM there it is - and you're done.

But it all depends on your approach - because there are a lot of different approaches to eBay.

    There are the personal manufacturers
There are the people who dropship
There are the offline product sourcers
    There are the importers
    There are the consignment sellers
    There are the service sellers

And so much more. Each approach is different in their product approaches, but essentially there are some fundamental similarities.

For example, there is the market research per item, the deductions per item, and the estimated total profit.

Then there is the listing of the item conforming to certain rules to exploit the 'best match' search (I have called them my personal '3 rules of eBay' that help you rank higher than ANYONE)

Then there is the construction of the listing where once you have BROUGHT the traffic, you then need to CONVERT the traffic - I call this your 'packaging' or your 'branding'.

(Essentially, the point is that PER item you need to target a maximum profit, a maximum ranking, and a maximum conversion rate)

So - that is one small part - and that is AFTER you have found your source and products.

But then this is where it gets fun:

Because once you have your listings in your 'store' this is seriously what I do PER DAY to manage just ONE of my eBay stores:

I send an email to my supplier that has this subject line:

    'Order report xx/xx/2013'

And in the body of the email it says:

    '1. Person x'
    Address line
    Address line
    Ordered Product: Quantity x

    2. Person x'
    Address line
    Address line
    Ordered Product: Quantity x'

    etc.

With an eBay store it is so easy to do bulk feedback, marking as shipped, adding tracking numbers, etc.

Once a month I need to pay my supplier invoices per item - but that is about a 5 hour process since it needs to be itemized per item - and I am VERY thorough PER ITEM (for accounting purposes)

But it is about 30 minutes per day processing the orders, and about 5 hours a month paying my invoices.

Outsourcing would cut into my profit - and would be unnecessary - but it was a LOT of work getting to this point.

  • And with that, I would NOT recommend dropshipping on eBay as your FIRST venture into eBay WITHOUT someone who has done it before.

I would recommend offline product sourcing for a while BEFORE even attempting to approach a supplier - otherwise they will not give you good deals on their products and will be less apt to negotiate pricing with you.

Plus, there are OTHER very profitable ways to sell on eBay (that are NOT dropshipping) to give you practice before you attempt to dropship.
