Magento Loading Time Problem!!

We are trying to decide on a new shopping cart for our site - we like Magento, however we are experiencing really slow loading times on the site. Our server has indicated that it could be due to Magento.

If Magento inherently effects the load time for our sites we will look for alternative shopping carts.

Does anyone else have a similar experience with Magento, will a dedicated server make a difference?

Are there any settings on Magento we can alter in order to get faster loading times?

Or, is Magento super duper fast for everyone else and really isn't the problem?

As an aside, anybody have positive experience with a Joomla/ Virtue Cart combo?

From what I know, Magento is heavy user on resources (web host). Dedicated server would help but I won't go for that if starting new.

In a trial with few ecommerce open source, I have problem with magento and IE. I can't login to the backend using IE (version 9). I tried the same with Firefox, it works like a charm. I'm not sure if the same goes for frontend, so in the end I opt for opencart.

  Unless you are on a dedicated or highly powerful VPS server, stay away from Magento. It is very resource intensive. If you want to go the open source route, check out both Open Cart and PrestaShop. I think PrestaShop has some of the most beautiful themes you can buy for your site to give it a gorgeous look and feel and either out of the box or with extentions will do most of what Magento will do.

  I run 2 baby gift shops, both now hosted on a dedicated server, one being a Magento site selling baby gifts which was slow on a shared server, and the other an Opencart site selling baby blankets which has always been quick
  
  Since using a VPS server I've been able to move them both across and the Magento site is now much quicker.
