  • Well,

You might not find a whole lot of help here.

    Here's why:

If someone has found a pretty good supplier for these, they're not going to be too keen on 'giving away their sources'.

No one likes giving away whom they're working with in order to have someone cloud their market.

After all, to find a dropshipper takes a lot of work.

For instance, it takes finding the demand, finding the competition, establishing a sales reputation, finding the market worth for each product, assessing the deductions, negotiating with the supplier, creating the listings/website, data collection, etc.

And even after all that business growing, we're still trying to establish ourselves as an authority in our niche and we're not to apt to give up our sources.

However - one thing you can infer from my process I've outlined here - you're skipping some steps.

Just picking a niche 'handbags' or 'luggage' and wanting to dropship it isn't a proper approach.

There is quite a bit of research you need to do BEFORE you decide on what to sell. And I can tell you handbags, for one, isn't a market you want to get into.

Yes, there is demand - but with the amount of competition out there - it will be very difficult to get your foot in the door.

    You need:

#1, people that WANT to find you
#2, people ABLE to find you
#3, people looking to BUY your product
#4, a PROFIT margin congruent to the market value
    #6, credibility
    #7, oh, and a source.

Great Post. You have hit the nail on the head. The most common cause of failure in any business must surely be lack of research.

I emphasize this point when responding to people who inquire about my book, because I don't want them to think they can have a bright idea today and start an importing business the next.

If they have done their research thoroughly, they could start importing today, although by that I mean starting the process of importing. Even if the product and its marketing have been decided upon and researched there are still essential steps to follow, and that amounts to more research.

In every major US city there are markets where manufacturers and manufacturers reps show their products. In Seattle (my neck of the woods) we have the Design Center. A large 4 story building with over a hundred "stores". You have to have a reseller license to visit and there is an amazing array of products and you talk directly to people who can sign you up. Just ask around or do a bit of Googling.

If this is the same as the Design Centers I know in a couple of other cities it is primarily for high end furniture, furnishings etc. Maybe a better alternative might be to look for trade fairs in a field that might be of interest. Quite often you will find overseas suppliers exhibiting as well as local manufacturers.

Just because a business exhibits at a fair does not mean they are legit. You will still need to check them out.
