Noob With a Few Questions

I have been learning as much as possible about e-commerce and have found the niche/suppliers needed. I would like some recommendations:

The niche has many products and brands associated with it. So, if I built one website I literally could have thousands of products on it and a hundred different brands. However, I would like to start making money soon and was going to focus on starting websites targeting specific products. I also am using BigCommerce so I can't afford trying to sell more than 100 products at the moment and building a giant website selling thousands of parts and many different brands would be too much at the moment.

For example: Niche = car parts (not real niche I am in)

I was going to build a website targeting two keywords within that niche. For example we will use: Ford Parts & Ford Air Filters

The Ford Air Filters is the keyword that I really wanted to target. It gets 4,000 exact monthly searches. And Ford Parts gets 1,500.

So the homepage would target Ford Parts and the category page would target Ford Air Filters

Then later on I was going to build a website targeting: Acura Parts

The thing is, in this niche with many products and brands, if I went with that approach I would end up with 100+ different very targeted websites to manage and possibly be competing against the same keywords.

So, should I just build one main website and start off just by selling the targeted keywords I wanted, and then eventually adding other brands and products to it overtime, eventually years from now having one giant car parts website?

So, I would just build one website targeting the main niche: Car parts
and to begin I would just start off selling Ford Parts and Ford Air Filters and then later on start adding to it by adding Acura parts.

Would I rank higher for Ford Parts and Ford Air Filters if I just built one website around those keywords or would it not matter and I should just start slowly building an entire website around Car Parts and then target the keywords on other pages on the website?

So, instead of making multiple sites like CarFiltersXYzzzZ.com and CarMufflersXYZZZZ.com

Should I just start slowly building one giant Car Parts website?

PAGES get ranked for keywords--not websites. Work on each page for a particular keyword and build a "silo" type of setup (WP example seen here: ).

The beauty with BigCommerce is you can SEO optimize your pages down to the product and page level. This is one thing I think BigCommerce does better than Shopify. So build out your product descriptions and in the meta tags, titles and descriptions for each product.

The other difference with BigCommerce over Shopify, is Shopify measures products by SKU. So a tshirt that comes in red white and blue is 3 products. Add small, medium and large and thats 6 products. In BigCommerce, if you do a tshirt with red, white and blue options, and 3 different sizes, its still only 1 product so you can play with your options sets to get more products out of the base BigCommerce store.

If you are on a budget I might have another hosted solution for you that would work. The only bad thing is you are stuck with the Base functionality of the platform and they charge you 150 bucks if you ever need to extract the products out of the platform but they do it on a percentage basis with a minimum 26.99 a month charge. Great way to get started on a budget.

Julia, thank you for your reply. This is the first time I have heard of a "silo" structure and I have done some research into it.

Here is what I am thinking when structuring my website, and hopefully you can give me some feedback.

      Site: examplecarparts.com
      Theme: Car Parts

      Silo:

      examplcarparts.com/car-brakes

      Silo Breakdown:

      examplecarparts.com/car-brakes/ford

      Continued:

      examplecarparts.com/car-brakes/ford/mustang

      Continued:

      examplecarparts.com/car-brakes/ford/mustang/2001

Then any related information to the silo I just anchor link to.

So if I had an article section on my website and one of the articles was about brake maintenance for a 2001 Ford Mustang, on the page examplecarparts.com/car-brakes/ford/mustang/2001 I would create an anchor link to the article

Would this be the best structure? Since I am dealing with many brands and products, should I structure by brand then parts or parts then brand? Ex:

      examplcarparts.com/ford/car-brakes

      or

      examplecarparts.com/car-brakes/ford

Yes, I was. I believe I have the general structure down that I need for my website. It just is a little difficult/confusing since I have so many brands and products.

I have your website bookmarked and will continue to use it in the future.

What was your final decision? Silos or work on the main site and optimize each page.

I would get Americommerce because it has multiple stores feature, so you could get a bunch of big stores going.

      Hope this helps!

The keywords Ford Parts & Ford Air Filters look pretty competitive.
