Skype or Google Voice for small biz?

I'm trying to decide which phone service to go with, Google Voice or Skype; it looks better to have than to not have. Even if it's only a robo response, legit is it. I only want something attached to my computer, since I spend most of my time at that station. I don't want it to go to my cell phone; I want to be in front of my screen to respond to most things in writing. I would also like one number for the two businesses if possible, just haven't figured out how to do that yet. What is your experience with a phone service attached to two different businesses? Is it hard to manage? Do you only rely on email to respond to customers? Need some help deciding. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

GV would be cheaper as I believe you need to pay for a phone number with Skype. I have GV and frankly it gives me a headache. Yes it works fine, I just can't figure out all the capabilities. Maybe I'm just lazy!

Skype is a lot more powerful and if you do any international it's great. Chat is its strong point and the group stuff you can do is great. And video conferencing. And Microsoft is sure to add on new features as it goes along.

But, if all you want is a "phone" at your desk then I think GV would be fine.

Google Voice is free. I have it forward to my cell phone and I have it setup where if it's from my Google Voice number my cell phone basically tells me with the caller ID. Then to make outgoing calls I can use either my cell phone number or my Google Voice number, it's an option. I prefer the cell because I'm not always in front of the same computer and really have never received a GV call on my computer.

Skype you have to pay a monthly fee and I believe it would have pretty much the same functionality as GV. The difference is Skype has a very good computer application to receive and make calls.

You can have one number for as many businesses as you want. You can just answer the call in a generic way ex. "Hello, this is Ray. How may I help you?" You might get confused about which business it's for, but I'm sure the caller will tell you what they're calling about and then you can figure it out.

GV has worked perfectly for me and it's free.

If you want to get more complex and have a whole bunch of phone numbers, phone menus and things like that you can use Twilio with OpenVBX to make and receive calls.

I've had better experiences with Skype. But really, it all comes down to personal preference.

I recommend Google Voice if you make most of your calls to Canada or the US, but otherwise, choose Skype.

You can even buy skype phones: Skype desktop and home phones - Make Skype calls from your desk or home phone - Skype Shop

Just my $0.02, but in the long run, with subscription packages, I think Skype could end up being cheaper if doing overseas business

after skype was bought out my microsoft, it has gone downhill. you can't even share your screen anymore. my suggestion is to find other alternatives than be in the back pocket of microsoft or you're just going to be limiting yourself.

I use Twilio. Easy to set up, unlimited potential and low charge. Use OpenVBX with Twilio to simplify the phone funnel and configurations (such as voicemail, etc..).

Another vote for Google Voice. You can make calls directly from your email, it has a smartphone app, and more.

Well, I think I'm going with both. I have Google apps for Business, so it's a quick set-up for GV. This I will use on the road, traveling. And it's free! Skype for working at my desk, which is, most of the time. I haven't figured out how Skype mobile works, tried to use it this morning while out of town, and couldn't get it to work in the few free minutes I had. I'll have to work with it a bit. I know I can have video conferencing on Skype, but how many outside of the other 4 members in Google apps I don't.

I use both, GV for phone calls, voicemails and Skype for online chat, screen sharing, etc.

I also use both...but in my experience voice calls on GV are always crystal clear while Skype calls are full of echo's and voice delays.

Skype gets my vote. I couldn't be without it. Plus, as an early adopter of Skype, I got a great deal which means I only pay $0.05 per call to anywhere in the world!
