I need help with china mainland shipping costs

I am looking to order a sample from a seller I found on Alibaba. The quote for one unit was 160.00 and the shipping quote was 86.00.

For 50 units they quoted 137.00/unit and for shipping 508.00

The item is about the size of a small flip-open cell phone.

On amazon a similar product will sell for around 160.00-200.00 dollars

I know this quote is way off both for unit cost and shipping but I don't know by how much.

How much would be fair to offer for shipping one of these? I was thinking 35.00 for the product cost and 20.00 for shipping. Could I go lower?

How about for 50?

I am new to this so your experience would be appreciated greatly.

    Hi Jonathan,

    I think you are looking in the wrong place. Alibaba is not one of the safe sites I recommend in my book. If you want more information PM me.

    It seems that you have found a wholesaler or dropshipper. If you are certain that you can sell 50 units you should consider going direct to the manufacturer, where you will get a far better price than with a dropshipper or wholesaler.

    Also, despite what people think about dealing with China, it is not a good idea to haggle. I have dealt with China since 1978 as an exporter and then since 1987 as an importer, so I know how to negotiate with Chinese business people.

    You also need to recognize that your initial sample will be expensive. There are ways around that, but clearly you need to find someone with a more realistic price structure and you need to be sure of absolutely all of your costs before ordering even a sample.

    There are other factors to consider such as your cost of selling, but I suggest you search posts by auctiondebteliminator for best advice on those.
