I just got a quote from a Chinese manufacturer. Below the product listings was 'Price terms: EXW/ But for full container , we offer FOB servise for free!' Not knowing what that meant, I looked it up. And come to find out, to the best of my abilities, it means that I am responsible for picking up merchandise from suppliers facility. They will however ship FOB, if I buy a container load. Like I have the ability, or the room, to buy a container.

Glad I didn't proceed with this, under these conditions. I would have been real surprised when my order, for my customer was waiting for me to pick it up from the manufacturer. I would have looked like a fool to my customer, and they would be pissed. I had to tell the manufacturer that I would not do business undr those terms. Damn, I thought I was making progress.

As far as I know, "EXW price" means price excluding any shipping costs. Simply, manufacturer's prices for picking items from their factory. If you want them shipped somewhere around the world, shipping costs will be added to this price.

Yes, I know shipping costs will be added. But how do I get the products from manufacturers dock to the ship? Unless I buy a container, they ain't going to get it on the ship for me. I ain't going to china go pick it up, that is for damn sure.

Tim, I'm learning about the process also and from my understanding, your best bet is to enlist a broker to take care of the shipping for you. If required they can pick up the shipment from the supplier right through to delivering it to your door. They handle customs etc and make sure it runs smoothly so you don't get nasty surprises such as paying the port to store your goods while you try and learn the process yourself.

You just have to makes sure you get the correct paper work to the broker so they can handle customs.

It seems daunting and I've never done it but the more I read the less worried I am. Hiring someone who knows the process seems to be the way most do it??

I agree, hire a freight broker. For a small fee they can handle everything for you and they can also provide tons of valuable insight for free just by calling.

I used: Transworld Group of Companies for years and I highly recommend their services.

I worked with the New Jersey office (TLSS Inc.)
