Contrary to the daily gripe and rumor I hear about eBay fees 'going up and up and up' here is an authoritative source that is saying eBay fees are going DOWN to compete with Amazon.

I for one, am okay with this. Although I didn't think the fees were a problem anyway, since the TRAFFIC justified the price (and I wouldn't sell anything that would give me a loss anyway)

What this DOES do is open up the marketplace to more items that you're ABLE to sell based on the deductions from the market worth.

Enjoy the article!

(Reuters) - EBay Inc said on Tuesday it will overhaul fees for sellers on its online marketplace, lowering them for many sellers as it steps up competition with Amazon.com Inc.

Actually it's quite a fee increase depending on the category and value of the items you sell. I sell in home and garden with most items from $100 to $1000 with fees of $5.50 for the first $50 and 6% for the rest up to $1000. Now it's 9% across the board fvf which would increase the fee on a $1000 dollar item from $62.50 to $90.

AuctionDebt in your ebook you say always use free shipping. How would you list an item that sometimes cost $30 to ship but depending on where it's going may also need to ship ltl truck freight for $120? I carry lots of oversized, heavy items that make it very hard to offer free shipping all the time. I have shipped 1 item across the country for $25 and also shipped the same item 1 state away to a rural address that ups wouldn't ship it to because of size that ended up costing $140 for ltl. How would you factor this into the price?

  • That is a very good question, and there is a work around.

Remember, that you're never ADDING shipping to the price of the product, but the price of the product COVERS shipping based on the MARKET worth of the item.

So long as you're making a profit on the item - that is what's most important.

However, I'll go into more detail on how to deal with it with an eBook addendum - good catch.

Ebay should've done this 6 years ago, before they lost all their sellers to Amazon.

On top of that, doing Auctions isn't as appealing to buyers anymore. Back in 2003-2004, people liked the idea of winning something in an auction. But based on the listings that I used to participate in, seems like there is little buyer activity.

Amazon is for a little more sophisticated buyer/seller so I think you weed out quite a bit of competition that just crowds listing spaces.

I think it is very appealing to the many sellers who have been banned on Amazon and have had no luck in the appeals process (like me). But for buyers, I agree that those shopping on Amazon are more higher-end than their eBay counterparts.

It's never too late in the race to change, save for when you're dead (of capital and strategy) and out of business.

So won't sellers just drop their price to suit? It would be nice if they didn't.

It's a common misconception that you need to DROP your prices to compete - or to even increase turnover.

And a lot of people rip their hair out of their head trying to 'compete' with people with low prices.

However, the fact remains that you can still SELL like crazy at a price people are WILLING to pay for it! This is the 'market worth'. You just need to know how to FIND it.

The secret to selling well on eBay (profitably) is to RANK high - if your traffic (that you get because you're ranked high) doesn't even KNOW that the lower priced items exist, and if you can ENGAGE them on your listings, then you've converted that sale - sold it at a FAIR market price, and you've made more money than the chump that thinks that 'selling cheaper means more money'.

Yeah I know that and agree but as you said in your OP, these changes won't affect those who don't rely on price point too greatly.

The reduced listing fees is great for start-ups trying to nail a product range though!
