This was just a random question I thought of earlier, and I figured I'd ask the pro's here.

But do you believe most ecommerce owners lack SEO skills?

I ask this because when I was digging around for niche's to enter, I realized that many ecommerce sites out there are not optimized correctly, appear unprofessional, lack content etc...

Now, I have just begun my ecommerce adventures, but from the SEO knowledge I have gained from this forum and online, it appears many ecommerce owners out there are missing out on a lot of important optimization techniques.

Not only does it appear many lack SEO skills, but business skills as well. I come from a business background, and there have been a few times where I had to deal with their customer service departments and it was a complete headache.

Now obviously there are many professional business owners out there operating in ecommerce, but I just found it interesting that there are also many unprofessional ecommerce stores being operated.

I look at this in a positive way though....plenty of opportunity for guys who want to take ecommerce seriously and build real businesses.

Yes most independent (mom and pop) ecommerce store owners lack SEO skills, however, MOST SEO specialists don't understand the nuances of optimizing for ecommerce.

I think for some people like me, it has much more to do with having the time and budget.

As an ecommerce site owner I learn as I go

What I have also come to realize, is there are a whole bunch, and I mean ALOT, of so called SEO professionals who lack SEO skills.

I find this interesting because from my experience, SEO on an ecommerce site is about 1000% easier when you are running name brand products. It gets harder when you when your using generic, private label or unbranded products but frankly, all the good carts now do all the SEO for you.
Yeah I am going to agree with you. I only recently started with PPC and not really liking it compared to organic SEO. So I only bid on very long tail niche for search and do display ads and remarketing.

But for organic, all the way. Yes it is easy with branded product, but you can also build a brand. I have built a brand from a more "generic" product and after a while, people search for the brand.

I would say its easier to rank an ecommerce site compared to a normal blog or informational site but that has just been my experience. Have others found this to be different?
I find it easier to rank, but harder to get organic backlinks for ecommerce. Whereas informational sites are more challenging to rank but easier to get organic backlinks.

I came to realization that majority of site owners in general lack SEO skills, not just e-commerce store owners. There is a lot of talk about it but no work is ever done behind the scenes.

If you notice when websites are for sale, number one suggestion to improve sales is doing SEO, that's because no one ever has the time to do or manage SEO process.

SEO is not that easy and you can burry yourself in an instant by doing something wrong. You are essentially putting your balls in googles hands and your success can disappear overnight if google chooses to punish you.

It's hard to find good SEOs because good ones work on their own sites. That's what I did, I learned to rank sites first, then made an e-commerce store and outranked eBay with amazon and official brand websites in some instances.

Now why would I waste time SEOing websites for clients when I can have my own site and take ALL the profits myself

SEO is 20% of what you do on your site and 80% is where you link from to it. So everyone looking to optimize meta tags and descriptions on their site, looking for best SEO cart is really just wasting time. Trust me.

    Most probably don't.
I know when I built my first ecommerce website years ago, I didn't have the slightest idea of what SEO was or how important it was. This probably explains why I only did a few sales now and then at the time!
And I'd bet a lot of people jump in exactly like I did.

Do you use Facebook ? Then you can make money just by inviting people to a Facebook group ! It's called the Instant Income System. How cool is that?

I also doubt that most ecommerce site owners do SEO or even know how to do SEO on their sites. It's something that takes quite awhile to learn. I know. I've been learning and doing SEO for my sites and for clients for 6 years.

Trying to rank in Google with SEO is like trying to hit a moving target. That's because google is constantly changing the ranking algorithm and SEO people have to be constantly adjusting their SEO techniques.

It's a matter of time too. How much time does a person have to run a site, learn and do SEO and learn and do Traffic-generation techniques, not to mention customer service, handling returns, doing email marketing, etc.?

In my opinion, ecommerce site owners would be better off by learning non-SEO traffic-generation techniques. Driving traffic is faster than learning, doing & tweaking your SEO efforts.

Basically, you need to learn and do some SEO techniques and/or learn some traffic-generation techniques. Here are my favorite traffic-generation techniques:

    1. Create unique and fresh articles
    2. Social bookmarking of your site
    3. Article submissions - Submit your articles to multiple article submission sites
    4. Blogging - Set up a blog that promotes and links to your site
    5. Blog Commenting on relevant blogs in your niche
    6. Press Releases that announce/promote your site
    7. Yahoo Answers - Answer questions and place a link to your site
    8. Directory Submissions - Submit your site to relevant business directories
    9. Guest Posting on relevant blogs
    10. Video Creation and submission to multiple video-sharing sites
    11. RSS feed submissions - Submit RSS feed to multiple RSS submission sites
    12. Social Media - Get active in multiple social media sites
