Need Help Understanding Google Shopping

Hey guys,

Could any of you recommend me a good guide/blog that explains how Google Shopping actually works (the ranking algorithm and how it ties in with your PLA bids)? I'm a bit confused and the Australian version has just adopted (or is in the process of adopting - so hard to know) the commercial structure used in the US so its difficult finding talk on the new way.

When you make the PLA do you have to also specify keywords or is it purely based on how Google interprets your feed? I understand it is a combo on relevance and bid price but does relevance include off-site properties (SEO) to the product page or once again, is it purely relevance based on the feed and the description/title included in the feed?

Are the products being shown only ones that are paying or do they include free listings? (The inclusion of free and paid links is once again confusing as they say it is now the commercial model so where are we getting the free clicks?) The results are being dominated by international ebay listings which is quite frustrating.

I just need some clarity on the best way to improve rankings, whether it be increased bids, offsite SEO, or wiser feeds.

Thanks.

PLA work off bid and display on google search pages above organic listings. Everything else as far as searching within google shopping is free.

For PLA, you can't specify keywords...the ads are shown based on the relevance of Titles/Descriptions in your Product Feed, as well as the Max CPC bid. It doesn't have anything to do with SEO authority of the website.

You CAN, however, edit Negative Keywords by going into the Search Query Report in Adwords and excluding any keywords you don't want to show up for.

In Google Search, PLA are Paid-ONLY. You'll pick up some free clicks across the Google Shopping Network here and there, but if you really want do volume, treat it like an Adwords account with active Bid and Budget Management tactics, and optimize Product Feed to be keyword-rich.
