Not using ReTargeting = Leaving money on the table

Hi,

Wondering how many of my fellow Warriors who run eCommerce sites use ReTargeting as a part of their marketing mix.

The behavior of a typical buyer is to compare and research products thoroughly before making a purchase. This means that even the best potential buyer has chances of leaving your site before making a purchase.

Given such behavior, isn't not using something like ReTargeting akin to leaving money on the table. Especially when spending money and time to get visitors to your store in the first place.

We use Google Analytics remarketing (I know different ad platforms have different names for it).

We've also been building custom lists, based on what people have viewed, and then sending ads relevant to what they have viewed. We're definitely going to get more into growing our remarketing strategy.

I'm thinking we might start to delay the ads so they don't show until a few days after the person has viewed the website.

I highly encourage every merchant, even if you have no idea what remarketing is, to go to Google Adwords and begin adding remarketing tags to your website, to build your list, so that once you understand how to use it, you will have a list to remarket to.

Thanks a lot for sharing your experiences malia. If you guys have experience using Google Remarketing, you should definitely give one of SiteScout, Perfect Audience or AdRoll a spin.

  • Yes, you DEFINITELY want to start retargeting, but there are other avenues that do it much cheaper than Adwords' display network.

        Hi Jason,

sometimes it is good idea for internet marketers to get out from computer and talk with real people/real customers.

Retargeting problem is for longer talk, but just one example from real world:

During my lessons on university I found quite shocking customer behaviour:

Some of your customers are going to your website/eshop only through adwords (or other PPC system):

I.e. in our case they type "silver jewelry" into search bar, and then check where advertising for www.Silver.Ag is located and click on it.
They ABSOLUTELY do not understand that they are clicking on paid advertising! They simply thinks that google shows them only "natural" search results. And, of course, with retargeting turned on - they found our website much more easily this way.

Now imagine that some customers likes our site very much, make 10-20 purchases, but clicks several hundred times on PPC this way - google is happy, but not us.

And - these are university students! - the nation´s elite - now imagine ordinary people.

There are much more hooks on this, it was just one example.

So it is good idea to double think about "new opportunities" in advertising like retargeting - it is definitely good opportunity for providers (google etc) but if you do not have free budget to burn, you have to double think about retargeting ROI.

You can exclude conversions from retargeting/remarketing, or show them different ads (i.e. suggest a repeat purchase after elapse of time). You cannot exclude them from search PPC however.
