Anyone Sell In The Music Sample Niche?

I'm curious. I know a guy who was making $40,000/month just selling music samples. I don't know him personally, but I've read a few articles on him. I also know some other major brands are pulling in some decent money in the music niche.

I've been producing for 12 years as a hobby, EDM mainly, and I know exactly what types of sounds people crave in this niche. I have also spent about $14,000 myself over this span of time and know thats a drop in the bucket compared to some serious sample/gear whores.

My goal is to set up the site, and focus on just a few premium priced, high quality sample packs. And to also focus on 1 sequencer (FL Studio). On top of that I will do a couple packs that are project files only (FLP's they're called in FL Studio). That will show newbies how certain sounds were made & layered. They will all be professionally done, very high quality. Most of which is already done since they're all my own sounds.

But I'm curious if anyone is in this niche? If so, are you making any profit?

My goal is not to become a huge brand, just to add another small, quality layer to my funnel. Some of the best packs ever made, that are truely timeless and have been recommended all over the web, were made 1 time by 1 producer. And nothing was ever released from them again. So my goal here is quality not volume. Although I will do a decent amount of marketing, I still want the sounds to do more marketing on their own.

    Yes and yes

There are actually several top names registered in the WF who are actively online operating in this industry. Some of them promote our products as well, and others sell their own products as vendors. My company creates and supplies sound files etc to some of the music software providers who in turn sell their music software to the consumer, and some are also listed on Clickbank. In other areas we also supply grooves and customized sounds to artists and producers who then use them to complete their productions. Sounds like you want to go in a similar direction?

    Awesome thanks,

Yes I would like to go in a similar direction. I have about 120gbs of personally made, soundfonts (sf2), multi layered direct wave and kontakt sounds, very rare pitched fx, and a bunch of other sounds. They are all dense, cream of the crop sounds made or layered with my virus ti and some other hard synths.

I also have a few FLP's from a DJ who use to work with Sean Tyas. A while ago I posted one of his project files on a forum, and it blew up to 36 pages in a matter of a few weeks. Which made me wonder how much $$$ people would pay for a professionally made project file, by a well known producer like Sean Tyas himself. I'm thinking about offering him some money, to make a custom made project file (if his friend pulls through) for exclusive rights on the file so I can sell it for $90-$100 a pop.

This would give amateurs and newbies the ability to see exactly how a top producer mixes down his tracks. How the sounds are made/layered, how fxs are done. But it wouldn't be like a video tutorial. Even a video tutorial like this is not the best way of learning -

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GijhE1K6oqM

That specific tutorial is sticked in a lot of different trance forums. No it doesn't have millions of views, but the small niche of people who make that type of music, love his tutorials. The problem is its hard to see a lot of the details of how his sounds are actually made.

With a project file instead of a video, they could actually go into the file and change things around, backwards engineer the sounds. Change any parameter they want. Yes they could also copy the track, but people can do that either way. The real value is in the details.

I've seen one guy selling Ableton project files for a while. I think he sells them for $40-$50 each. He's a decent producer but I still consider him an amateur.

Here is one of his tracks -

He sells those project files like I said. The problem is he's not well known. And his music is only borderline pro imo.

So what I want to do, is pay professional producers, people with reputations in a certain genre, to make better project files for a more popular sequencer, then I sell them. Maybe even give a royalty to the artist on every sale.

It would be a great way to gain a lot of attention, then I can sell a few high quality sample packs on the same site.

Its not going to be easy, maybe not even possible, but it would only take 1 success to work. There are other producers, some retired like Andy Blueman, who also have a large fan base. I know for a fact if I could get him to make a project file (any producer like this), lots of people would pay good money for it. I definitely realize how hard it would be, but its still worth a try. Even some of the best trance producers don't make any money. And this gives them another avenue to sell their work, to people who want it most.

  • Thanks for the info and links to the videos. Your ideas are valid and you should try to grab a slice of this niche because it's who you are, and it's in your DNA. As you suspect it's not going to be easy, however if it was easy then everyone would be doing it right?

I guess that's why most marketers lean towards simple stuff such as rewriting PLR and creating eBooks. Nowadays what most IM'ers call a product, even my 6 year old can do, as in, write a story, convert it into a pdf, and upload it. I guess that's why that market is now over saturated.

However setting up a business structure as the one you propose, and or composing and creating quality music and sound files etc, requires an investment into equipment and creative skills.
Which makes doing this not as simple for most, which is good for you and I as there is much less competition.

Either way to get back to your main question of profits, it's going to depend on how much of your marketing skills you implement into your venture. Creating cool music products is one thing, but as you know, standing out in this jungle is a whole other book. However, I believe everything is now possible online and you can certainly make a name for yourself in any niche. I mean, if a virtually unknown Korean dude can upload a video of him doing a horse dance and rapping lyrics that no one understands and hit 1.5 billion views in less than a year, then we really have no excuse now do we.

Could you give us a name or a link to an article, or some tidbits on how he's selling his samples?
