I am currently searching for an e-commerce store builder software.

Any great recommendations?

I prefer a desktop app just like XSitePro.

Easy to create/save projects and edit them like how you edit with MS Word Editor. Like video games and compile a list of all my favourite ones listed on Amazon.

I would recommend "Shopify" Online Store Builder. However, you must check following URL to see comparisons and reviews of eCommerce Software in 2013.

If you plan on setting up a huge shop with a great product range, you would be better off with Magento. It is a Content Management System itself. If, however, you rather tend to offer only a small amount of items, I would recommend Wordpress with the free 'WooCommerce' plugin, since it enables you to build a blog around your store and bring in nice amounts of targeted traffic in terms of SEO.
There are beautiful free themes for both of my suggestions to get you started right away while looking professional.

    Good luck with your site!
    Sincerely,

OK, you can't ask such an open ended question without qualifying what you are really looking for since there are so many options and right now people will just spew off their favorite cart or what they heard is a great cart.

How many products? How many SKU's
How many categories? Will you have sub categories?
      What is your budget?
Do you prefer self hosted or hosted?
      Are you technically capable?
Do you need to do subscription or recurring orders?
      Digital or Physical Goods?
      Drop shipping or warehousing product?

You can look in my sig and I have links to two reviews I have done on various carts and in there is a third review as well

If it is a very niche store, shopify can be very good but also a tad expensive given that you have to buy or rent functionality that is included in other carts natively. It is also the easiest shopping cart you will ever have to deal with.

Big Commerce is my favorite and gives a good balance between functionality and ease of use yet can be a bit harder to customize since you have to go into the CSS yourself.

If you want Open Source, I would suggest OpenCart or Prestashop. They are both lightweight so you dont need heavy duty servers and functionality can be added via modules and plugins yet it can get expensive. There are lots of nice looking themes you can buy fairly cheap.

The only time I would suggest Magento is if you have the time, budget and expertise to handle it. Magento is designed to do just about anything but required ALOT of technical expertise and heavy duty servers. If you can budget at least $100 a month between your servers and SSL certificate, it might be an option. Realize that the hosted carts will do 95% of what magento will do without the hassles.

I have just started setting up an Americommerce shopping cart for a client. Seems to be pretty powerful but ugh you can tell it was designed by a programmer.

What platform you should use depends on many factors, but the most important are the number of the products and your budget.
In first case go with something like WooCommerce and in second case I'd suggest Magento.

If you implement WooCommerce, do you have to install a WooTheme? Can you not use any theme (themes not built by Woo)?

I've been on their site and it seems to me that WooCommerce requires a WooTheme. This could be a problem if your client already has a theme/brand in place.

I have build several shopping carts for my clients (I am web developer) and I believe Magento is my number #1 shopping cart platform.

Here is the link to it Magento eCommerce Software and Platform | Magento

First of all it's the open source platform (you can buy license for it if you need support and you are big shot e-commerce seller since license costs are $14,999) Don't get scared, as I stated is the open source and is free of use. You might need professional web developers to set it up for you. But once its done is so easy to use with all those modules. Trust me that is the top notch e-commerce buster.

It's over kill for most people, and a nightmare if you are not a developer. OpenCart, PrestaShop, Zen Cart, OSCommerce are all open source and don't require nearly as much server resources, are easier to customize, add functionality to and better for DIY'ers just starting out and want to do open source.

If you are pretty new to eCommerce meaning you have a couple years in or less, then I recommend Shopify. Very user friendly, decent customer service, and you can get a site up pretty quickly. I don't know the pricing off hand, but last I checked it wasn't bad.

If you are dabbling with a larger store, and you want more customizable options, maybe a specialized layout (which Shopify can actually accommodate since there aren't a whole lot of cool layouts for free on Shopify) then I recommend PrestaShop. Prestashop isn't very extensive, a lot of plugins or addons are low cost, there is a decent amount of users out there which will allow you to troubleshoot your own problems and it isn't too hard to find a freelance web designer and developer that can get you thing done inexpensively. I would have liked to stay with Prestashop for my hundreds of stores, but had issues with my uncommonly large database of items and PrestaShops import/export .csv function - because it wasn't reliable for me, I went to Magento.

I'm with Magento now because I have hundreds of niche eCommerce stores that import/export data from my three main eCommerce stores with over 4 million different items of inventory in constant rotation. I feel that Magento is over kill for 99% of eCommerce store owners and even large corporations that use Magento for their web presence. However.... because many noob merchants attempt to utilize Magento there is a large amount of freelance help available on places like oDesk.

Woocommerce will work on any theme. Some themes have woocommerce features built in like extra widgets and custom CSS styling.

Always best to go with a theme that supports it because you know everything been tested well.

If you want to go with host based solution, Bigcommerce and Shopify are best chances to go. But for standalone product you may choose merchant platform to bring more stores under you. Uniecommerce may be a option to consider and it is low cost also.

Hopefully, it's OK for me to add on to this thread and ask another question.

New to e-commerce and have a content rich/niche site (2nd site will be strictly e-commerce/stores). We have found that while Weebly is great, we've already begun to outgrow what they have to offer -- AND we are finding we prefer a desktop software program for a multitude of reasons.

I've researched, read reviews for days now and there's just soooooooooo much stuff out there.

I am a DIY with beginner HTML experience (which I'm going to change and learn more).

While Dreamweaver has its many positives, I seek more user-friendly, visual (WYSIWYG) type of interface so that I can transition (via cut and paste mostly) our current site before expanding it much further.

Oh, most of this site is affiliate marketing.

As of last night, the final review I read was for Net Objects Fusion 13 and it seems interesting. I've looked at everything from WP to Woo... to Id3 templates and a whole lot more.

While online editors have many positives, I want a more secure, flexible yet non-overfacing way to design this particular site yet with user-friendly interface. Some of the MS software we researched will no longer be supported and no further updates - so obviously they were eliminated.

Any suggestions? I can wiggle my way through html and can make very minor CSS/JS modifications - very minor. That said, my goal is to become more proficient in these areas so I have more control over the design, etc.

Until then, we need to move forward, and overall, we aren't comfortable being able to reload so much website data (knowing we will lose slide shows and photos -- just went through this due to a technical issue a couple of weeks ago), which is the case with the current editor. We can download an archive copy, but cannot upload it since Weebly is structured differently It's super - drag n drop, but we've learned that this may not be the best solution for our needs.

Hope to get some feedback soon. There's just so much stuff out there and we need to make this transition sooner vs. later. Thanks in advance for your input.

PS - Any feedback on the software mentioned - XSitePro? Looking at their website now.

Another thing we'd like to consider is a software that will be around for a while and upgraded as technology changes -- not a fly-by-night software that we'll only be able to use for a short time. In other words, a reputable brand...

The problem with WP based stores is that they can be easily hacked. I used to have eCommerce store and at least once a week I found in statistics inside my eCommerce Admin panel that people try to login using:

    justexamplemywebsitenamedotcom/wp-admin

This is shocking considering that all my database including customers email and addresses can be hacked as simple as that!
If you looking for long time business go for custom made .php store. You can use any theme that comes free with eCommerce and ask programmer do for you settings, dont do it on your own. My programmer used Dreamweaver for modifications.

This is completely untrue. WP is one of the most secure CMS's out there. There are a lot of hack attempts against wp sites, because they know most people will use the defaults, and even more wont update, but compare WP to many other CMS and ecommerce platforms, and it rocks.

If its untrue than why such attempts was happen??? Why people try directly input ..../wp-admin? I honestly wishing this would never happen to you if you using WP, but with my inventories of 50K+ items for sale the last thing I want is to be hacked. Try to figure admin login page for eCommerce store. Can you? Its impossible unless you are the owner. Its happen to me, its can happen to anyone.

The choice of shopping cart is one of the most important step into e-commerce.
First of all, determine what you expect from your store.
I'd recommend to use hosted solutions, cause they are more easy to start work with. Try Shopify, BigCommerce, Volusion or 3dCart. All of them have their pros and cons. And all of them have a trial period.
Also check this infographic to realize what to choose.

I made my first ecommerce with Miiduu. Better don't go for the cheapest option and spend 10-15$ monthly bucks more for a solid solution. I had to learn this the hard way and now I am looking for a new store.

Is anybody using a feature on the product page of a sold out/not available item that replaces the "Add to shopping cart" button with something like "Notify me when back in stock". Then when you click on it a small window will pop up and let you the customer leave their mail address. Like this here: House Tour Guide Dress | Mod Retro Vintage Dresses | ModCloth.com

I have read many good things about Shopify but there only seem to be one app that charges around 40$ monthly for this function and wonder if there are any better shop builders featuring this special feature?!

Bigcommerce.com looks well rounded if you're plugging your inventory into Amazon and eBay too, which you can do with multichannel solutions like SellerExpress. If you're a bricks 'n mortar seller, Shopify has just announced a POS solution that allows you to sell your Shopify inventory in physical stores.

I would be a little wary of using the free alternatives if you're serious about your business and need to be found on search engines. I just read a review about some free and cheap ecommerce solutions today that have no SEO features, and so users would have to spend a lot on Adwords to even get found in Google search results etc.

Run some trials and ask other users of each platform—it's not that one is better than the other necessarily, but more that one suits your specific needs and business better than the other.

    Good luck with your store.

I recommend going with a hosted ecommerce platform like Volusion. It's really easy to work with, but can be customized too (with a little HTML/CSS knowledge). They don't charge transaction fees an offer a free demo to make sure it's right for you.

The best thing to do is try them all out though. Check out Volusion, Shopify and Bigcommerce (they all offer free trials).

    Good luck

Shopify, Bigcommerce and 3dCart are hosted, easy to customize, and have pre-built themes that are visually appealing. Each of these sites are great for fashion, home goods, jewelry, and other retailers who sell products that rely on the quality of photos and layout.

Magento and ZenCart are perfect for sellers who are comfortable building and designing the site themselves. They are free, and give you access to global forums where you can ask questions and share knowledge with developers around the world.
