Big Commerce is courting me

haha. Serisouly, I am considering the jump away from self hosting my ecommerce store. A few quick emails with Big C and they are telling me upfront cost would be minimal.

Step 1: They offer template to choose from to get started (didn't mention price)
Step 2: Customize layout (might need to do some HTML/CSS coding or hire someone who can).
Step 3: They suggested using hourly design person to do final tweeking (mentioned they are usually pretty cheap).

So has anyone gone thru these steps? What would be your best guess to my start up cost to get this store running similar to one I have here: Natural cosmetics | 100% Pure | Long lasting lipstick | Anti wrinkle cream | Mineral makeup | Paraben-Free Products | Guuky.

Thanks
C

VERY EASY. Bigcommerce has a new template that looks just like that. I did not dig deep, but I don't see anything needing custom design work. As a developer myself, I could get a BC store like that up and running within hours....

I always recommend hosted shopping carts over self-hosted scripts.

I remember back in 2005-2007 being an advocate of "code ownership" and avoided the hosted storefronts like the plague. But there were two reasons for that.

    1. In the 10 years prior, there wasn't much that had changed with eCommerce.
    2. The hosted solutions all looked the same, and selection was limited to a handful of cheesy templates.

Right around 2010 I did a complete 180 and started advocating hosted platforms. As VPS's and cloud computing became rock solid standards, and companies started taking eCommerce seriously, neither of those barriers were the case anymore. Today, sites like Volusion and BigCommerce can not only deliver a functional store, but you aren't restricted to a handful of templates. They look good, are flexible, and even some of the Fortune 1000 companies are running their eCommerce sites through hosted solutions instead of self-hosting. It just makes more sense. As much as eCommerce has changed in the last 5 years, if you are running a cart that was built in 2007 you are behind the curve - and the same will be the case five years from now. Meanwhile, customers on a hosted platform, had a team of engineers adding features and making updates in the background that were guaranteed never to break their site, corrupt their database, or alter the appearance of their products. Even "community supported" platforms as widely used as Wordpress aren't as trouble-free.

So yeah, definitely stick with hosted. Here's an article I wrote in 2011 that will give you some more insight:

    Hosted Shopping Carts vs. Purchased

Agreed with Ronrule above. Another point that I'd mention is that increasingly, these platforms are opening up robust marketplaces for app developers to provide their services to those who are hosting their stores on these platforms. For a self-hosted store this is not available which means that you are on the losing end if you competition is hosted on a platform and is able to take advantage of some amazing apps that help you take your business to the next level. Here is an example of one such app - its available on big C but not for self-hosted platforms. Bigcommerce Apps & Ecommerce Plugins - Incentivibe

    Hope that helps.

I have written an article on this comparing various ecommerce software 3-4 years back and am keeping it updated. There are so many products in the market and it is difficult to keep up. Bigcommerce is definitely easier to customize than the other products especially if you have some technical knowledge. Hope this ecommerce ratings help you out.

just update. Received call from marketing branch of Big C and they cover SEO (backlinking), adwords, Social Media and Custom design your site. The also build back-end blog that has populated keywords designed for crawlers from google, bing & yahoo (not blog designed for general public to read) and hopefully ranks your product images in google product searches. Price packages start at $500 and go up to $25,000 monthly.

That must be the fastest way to get your site banned from Google. Great way to spend $25,000 a month. Yay!

I've decided to use Big Commerce for my new site as well. I've been researching for the past couple months and it came down to them or Shopify, but I don't want to have to pay 2% of my sales to Shopify or even 1% if I upgrade.

I've gone through a few of Big C's instruction videos, available apps, etc and it's very simple to list your items.

Also, I spoke to their support yesterday regarding the quantity of items you can list for each monthly plan. I was concerned that each individual item might be counted such as sizes, colors, etc, but that's not true. If a widget has 10 sizes, colors, etc it only counts as one item.

The only thing I don't like is that my current merchant account provider isn't one of their 50 payment options. Still, I suppose it's best not to have all my eggs in one basket anyway.

    Going Big C!

Hey, forget Nig C, go with Ron Rule, he has the best platform I have seen. I am sure if you use his platform, and follow his lead, you will be making more money than you ever thought you could before you know it.

Ron has a slick plan that will drive thousands of visitors to your store within days, so if you have a store that can sell, you will cash in big time. and you can keep doing that over and over. How much money do you want? Talk to Ron.

This was an unsolicited testimonial. Ron had no idea I was going to say all of this.

Thanks for the recommendation, Tim. I visited his site and didn't see a platform, though. I did read a couple articles, though, and didn't see a whole lot that I didn't already know, although I'm sure there's much more information in the product that he has for sale.

I'm not in a position right now to drop $3,000.00 up front on pay per click to find out what's converting, as he recommends. Unfortunately, like so many others, I lost my Adwords account and that leaves Bing, which I do use sometimes, but I've never used Facebook advertising.

I can still spy on my competition, though, and see where they're spending their money. I can also talk to account reps where I buy my products to find out what they're selling a lot of right now.

In addition, I also have a good relationship with a competitor and we keep each other in the loop about what's selling well right now, what's good or bad quality, what's getting rave reviews, what's being returned a lot, etc. Most people don't think so, but your competition can be a great resource. Just treat each other with respect.

I'm doing 100% telemarketing and have been for years successfully, but I figured it was about time I got an online presence since most of my competitors have.

Ron, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts. As I said, I didn't see an option for an ecommerce platform on your site, only a how-to ebook. Care to share? :-)

You were on my eCommerce blog I think. Most of my clients are nationally recognized brands, and the platform Tim was referring to is the back-end for their sites. It was originally developed for big companies, but this summer it's being opened up to smaller sites and mom & pop shops with more down to earth pricing. There will be an announcement and some free access for Warrior members when the time comes, but I'm not here to promote it right now.

In the meantime, stick with BigCommerce - although they and I "will be" competitors, they have a great platform that should help you get up and running and give you the tools you need to help your site be more successful than any script-based cart. If you're interested you can still apply the "Zero Cost Traffic" strategy once your eCommerce site is up and running.

As for AdWords, how did you lose your account? I hear this talked about on WF like it's a common thing ... along with PayPal accounts getting closed, AdSense accounts being suspended, etc. I've never had any of these issues, or heard of anyone else having them before joining WF. Seems to be isolated

I appreciate your honesty. I'll definitely check out "Zero Cost Traffic" once I'm up and running. I signed up to be on your list as a reminder. I can definitely use some zero cost traffic. Even if I were still using Adwords, it would be unlikely that I could compete with the "big boys" right out of the gate. The cost per click in my niche is very high because of the lifetime customer value. However, I've seen that some of them aren't very experienced with basic SEO and I think I can exploit that without too much effort.

I lost my Adwords account back when Google did their first sweep of affiliates. I believe it was July, 2008? They closed 15,000 accounts then and then did even more the following November. I lost about 75% of my income overnight. That hurt. It hurt a lot of people. I learned a hard lesson. Never put all of your eggs in one product or traffic source.

I was doing well with CPA offers at that time, promoting for a few different companies and trying to do things the right way, unlike many others. Well, I screwed up ONE time and made the mistake of promoting a business opportunity offer that others were making a lot of money with. I set it up one evening to test it with a $100.00 cap, ran it until the following morning and found that I'd broke even. Still, I wasn't comfortable with it, so I shut the campaign down.

Three weeks later I got the the unhappy news from Google stating that they were not only closing my account, but my wife's account as well! We'd been using the same credit card and she was apparently "guilty by association". Sucked.

I contacted Google about three months ago and explained what had happened, admitted my mistake, asked them to look at all of the 100% clean business I'd done for around 4 years prior to that and asked them to reconsider, but they wouldn't. Actually, the person said it wasn't because of the single incident, it was because of my affiliation with that one CPA company. Apparently they'd been really hammering some people. I wasn't aware, honestly.

Anyway, live and learn. The good news is that there's still a lot more traffic out there besides Google.

      Thanks for replying.
