  • The house still has yet to approve it, and there is more opposition there.

I really don't like the 'PC' name of it - where it connotes 'leveling the playing field'.

It just doesn't make sense to me. Brick and mortar stores have the advantage in proximity to customer, Internet merchants have the advantage of price - so it all levels out as 'fair' already.

    Field is already level.

Plus, consumers are going to be hit even more as the price of goods goes up yet again.

And the fact that it only affects those making more than 1 million?

Well, if you give government an inch, they'll take a mile.

Right now, through my store, I will only have to charge tax on items sold in California. Does this mean that I will not have to charge until I reach the million $ mark (sure, right) for states outside? This sounds like it's going to be a headache, for sure.

I was interviewed by NBC's Consumer Advocate for the web and radio show about this bill on Monday, here's a writeup I put together shortly afterward. Hopefully the House stops it in its tracks, if not, store owners could potentially face technical challenges greater than Y2K.

How would this apply to people selling online from outside the USA? I am in Canada.

Shouldn't affect you at all, other than making any U.S. products you buy more expensive.

I suspect what a lot of the smaller online retailers who don't have the budgets to rework their shopping carts will do is just raise their prices across the board instead of configuring individual state rates.

So, what would the Canadian Taxes be, What if I were to move my business to Canada, sort of like a Delaware or Nevada Corp.
