HI!

If I'm to start/build an eCommerce site, which of the following ecommerce solutions can be integrated with Commission Junction and Clickbank?

1. Presta Shop
2. Magento
3. Cubecart
4. OSCommerce
5. Zen Cart
6. AgoraCart
7. Open Cart
8. Tomato Cart

Thanks a lot!

If you're only looking to use an Open Source cart, I would go with Open Cart. Its a personal favorite. But if you consider a hosted cart, you cant go wrong with Shopify or BigCommerce.

        Hi
Excuse the newbie question, but what's the difference between an open source cart, and a hosted one? Is the open source cart a plug-in to an existing website/blog, and if so, do the hosted cart providers, eg Shopify' only function with their own hosted environments, or can you plug them into an existing site?
        Thanks,
        Mark

A hosted cart incurs a monthly fee, but it is definitely easier to get up and running fast, especially if you are new to ecommerce.

Shopify only works within their server environment.

Open Source = Free software that can be downloaded and installed on your own hosting account.

Hosted or Turnkey = Premium cart software that includes hosting and limits your access to higher level control panel areas.

There's a good post on my blog about this very subject that should make this crystal clear to you: Top 5 Reasons NOT to Use a Free Open Source Shopping Cart - Store Coach Blog

You should only use an open source cart if:

          1) You are only planning to accept PayPal Standard and never take credit cards on your own site. Open source carts are never PCI compliant without additional work and/or plugins and you cannot safely accept credit card payments on your site without being PCI compliant.

          2) You are okay with "patching" and updating the software a couple times a year yourself, or paying a programmer to do it for you. Open source cart software is notorious for being "buggy" and having security vulnerabilities. So be prepared to install patches periodically!

          3) You are an experienced programmer or are okay with paying for ongoing customization and fixes. Open source carts are rarely flexible enough to handle every situation and usually need a fair amount of tweaks and/or plugins to handle what you need.

We used to use open source cart software and a couple years ago we just gave up on it completely. Your time is much better spent promoting your store and working on maximizing profits, not managing your store software and overseeing ongoing patches and programming tasks. A decent web hosting account is $8-$10 a month and BigCommerce (which includes hosting) is $24.95 a month. That ~$15 monthly savings is NOT worth the headache of running your own software! It took me 8 years to learn this... hopefully you're smarter than me!

I've used Magento successfully for a few years, but recently changed over to Prestashop and I am happier with it.

I've heard a lot of bad stories regarding Magento. I know there are people who use it and love it, but it just wasn't for me. I have looked into Prestashop, but ended up using Open Cart because I liked the available themes better.

Is woocommerce open source? Ive heard lots of people recommend it. Easy to use and such, so would I need to be "patching" and "updating" all the time? I would like to use more then just paypal for payment, credit cards and such. Maybe even debit credits that now are able to make purchases online.

Why is no one talking about BigCommerce here ? Its just the best available online. You can avoid the monthly fees - I can help you with an indefinite subscription with all the features .

I've used most of the major hosted e-commerce platforms and would tend to agree. I like the feature mentioned elsewhere on this thread but for me, the integrations really appeal. The fact you can easily and quickly use other apps to help with marketing, accounts and operations is a big win.

I also agree with the other opinion that your best starting with a hosted solution versus open source/proprietary with hosting. This is true even if you're a developer, at least until you gain significant scale.

Yes, BigCommerce is my favorite option. 100% PCI compliant, includes hosting, great support, huge community to get help/advice from. You can't beat BigCommerce IMHO!

Would you please stop with the anti-wordpress, 100% PCI compliant speel in every single thread. No one seems to care but you.

For me the answer is Shopping Cart Elite. Bigcommerce or Magento, can't be even compared to their options. Especially for bigger sites, that need a high level of automation tools, you would have a hard time with Bigcommerce or Magento.

Nowadays, Magento is leading eCommerce platform. Another eCommerce platform can't be compared to their options with Magento. It helps you create custom modules exclusively for your custom module store.

For enterprise or SMB market I will recommend Magento. It has more features, is flexible and a better architecture (built on Zend framework) than all of the other open source solutions out there. It also is much more secure from vulnerabilities. The drawback is that it is a resource hog, and you need optimized hosting. For a small hobby shop you could probably go with Zencart or something, but they are in different leagues in my mind.
