How can you find dropshippers

I've been looking on bing the past couple nights and when I type in dropshippers I get the couple big ones that charge fees and also listings of dropshippers on a site that you have to pay a fee to join. Is there anyway to find dropshippers that don't charge these fees? Or does anyone know of any companies who dropship women's accessories?

DO NOT pay for a wholesale directory!!!

I'm not saying they are a complete scam, but your money can certainly be better spent elsewhere. 95% of the time you can find the best wholesale supplier for your product line by contacting the manufacturers of the top brands directly. If the manufacturers won't dropship for you, ask them for contact details for the distributors that buy in bulk from them. Often times, the manufacturers and the distributors will dropship for you, even if they don't call it "dropshipping."

The vast majority of the legit dropshippers in the large wholesale/dropshipping directories are going to be manufacturers and distributors anyway, so save yourself a few hundred dollars and just cut them out and go direct to the source.

This comment won't go over well with the owners of dropship directories and their affiliates, but it is the honest truth. I have an account with 3 of the biggest "dropship directories" on the web and almost never use them to source my products. I do find them to be valuable, but more for brainstorming product line ideas than finding suppliers.

I hope this helps the folks that are at this stage in the process!

I agree with a lot of this. Face to face i.e meeting with suppliers, is still the best way to do business IMHO. Obviously if they're on the other side of the world, you have to travel.

Alternatively, email and video conferencing would be my second option.

Having visited China countless times since 1978 (as an exporter) and since 1987 as an importer, I agree that there is no substitute for face to face meetings.

There is however a very good second best, and that is, safe sourcing methods. That involves using only the one or two B2B sites that don't allow traders or resellers to falsely list as manufacturers. You won't ever see them recommended on IM, because they are not the biggest and don't have big advertising budgets.

Instead they spend money on serious verification that involves a lot more than just confirming that the business exists. To me that sort of "verification" is not very reassuring.

Why do I always suggest manufacturers instead of wholesalers? The answer is very simple. Massive differences in profit, even on small orders. If you want to make serious profits, you need to go direct to genuine manufacturers.

Never pay for a dropship or wholesale site you can find them in google by typing the product name or niche + dropshipper (example: xbox 360 console + dropshipper)

I am pleased that you have found some success with Salehoo, but until you find out the massive profits that you can get by buying direct from the real manufacturers, even in small quantities, you will be working harder for less money.

Do you have a directory of manufacturer that you can share?

You don't need a directory. Look up virtually any brand name on Google and you will find the manufacturer's website at #1 95% of the time. Then look at their website and find contact details, it's as easy as that!

          Hi jbowden,

I am talking about overseas manufacturers where you can buy direct in small quantities. That way you don't pay extra for dropshipping and you have control over your small inventory.

You can use my "just in time" ordering system which works better than dropshipping.
          This is how it works:
          1. You buy a small inventory and start selling.
          2. You have happy customers because you can dispatch the same day.
          3. Once you are certain you are on a winner you place another order and it is delivered door to door for you via air courier.
          4. The huge profit margins include the cost of the air courier.
          5. You can increase inventory size or product range using some of the profits.

The key to this system is finding real manufacturers. not the thousands of them posing as manufacturers on popular B2B sourcing portals. In reality they are traders, wholesalers, or resellers who would eat into your profits if you fall for it.

    ImportExport,

I hear what you say, and I am all for decreasing costs and maximizing profits. However, as a newbie to ecommerce, I see the advantages of dropshipping. If I were to purchase a small shipment from a Chinese manufacturer direct, I would still have to find a place to warehouse the inventory and then pack and ship the orders out. That can eat up a lot of time and money, which could be invested into marketing the business to generate sales.

Another point is that if I could have the manufacturer directly dropship, versus middlemen resellers that will be taking a cut, it is highly possible that I will be getting a really good price. I just have to check that the potential margins are still worthwhile.

For these reasons, I believe dropshipping is the best way to go, especially for someone like myself who is stepping into online commerce the first time. Perhaps you have a different perspective, and it will be great to hear your view as well. Thanks.

      Hi Sandra,

Thank you for your comments. I would not be thinking of orders large enough to cause a warehousing problem. During the 22 years that I ran my importing business, I and my franchisees only needed space about the size of 2 wardrobe closets. We were importing small size, high value items.

Most orders we placed were around $500 but it was common to receive shipments as little as $100 value.

The time taken to pack and ship a parcel on which you make $500 profit is a lot less than the time to handle all the order processing of 50 items at $10 profit each even if you dropship. The profit % difference between direct importing from factories and dropshipping can often be that great.

This is not theory on my part. I did it for 22 years, and since I sold my franchise business operating in 4 countries, the franchisees are still doing it. Many posts I have seen on WF support what is my experience in relation to profit margins.

There are other things to take into account, such as the good feeling of knowing that you won't be left in the lurch by dropshippers running out of stock or discontinuing a product line without bothering to tell you. That is a very common complaint made by warriors who have become unhappy with dropshipping.

Also, don't forget that when you buy from a dropship supplier, that is a B2B transaction and you have no consumer protection. Your customers do, and if they return a lot of product, you have to find the money to finance those refunds, and still carry them in stock until you sell them - if ever. Demand may have gone off the boil due to sudden release of an updated version, or merely a fashion fad has changed, or you may have chosen purple but the color most people prefer is red. You will make the refunds but may not sell the returned items, without taking a heavy loss.

If such returns happen when you have imported direct from real manufacturers, you will be able to discount by 50% and still make a profit. That way you would not only liquidate your inventory, but also make a much bigger margin than the average dropshipper.

Thanks ImportExport. I see the wisdom of what you are saying, and will keep your views in mind. At the moment, I need to research into and decide on what to sell. Small and high value would be nice.
