Theme does not declare WooCommerce support

We've finally decided on a theme its "Mountain Creek" by Gorilla Themes. Mountain Creek

Its not exactly an eCommorce theme but we love the layout and design. It fits our niche perfectly, which is selling rustic cabin decor, antler lighting and chandlers stuff like that. Name of the business is Antler Barn. When I added the WooCommerce plugin it said "Theme does not declare WooCommerce support" Is it possible to turn this into a small eCommorce store using Mount Creek theme? Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

I think that message is just indicating that you aren't going to be entitled to free support since Woo is a free WP plugin.

Remember though, as I've mentioned in this thread, you cannot accept on-site credit card payments on Woo as it's not PCI compliant. You can safely take off-site solutions like PayPal without worrying about it, but you are limited there. We find that for the average ecommerce store your conversion rate will increase significantly by taking credit cards on-site.

Would it just be easier to use a full service hosting shopping cart and then tweaking one of their themes to look like Mountain Creek?

@herdfan2005 - That's a good point, you can also use an iframed solution like PayPal Advanced and avoid PCI compliance issues. Even though iframed solutions are technically off-site, they give the customer the experience of paying on-site. The only shortcoming of these solutions is that since the payment form is hosted off-site and being iframed in, you can typically do NO customizations whatsoever. So if you need a custom field or want to add graphics within that area, you are limited there.

Also note, PCI compliance is NOT limited to credit card details. You cannot store ANY sensitive info on your own server unless you are PCI compliant. Otherwise you run the risk of penalties like losing your payment processing account.

@maxamillion125 - yes, that's exactly what we do and recommend. Find the theme (aka template) that's closest to what you want within the hosted solution you choose and make some tweaks to get it just right.

Has anyone used freelancer.com? I'm thinking about just having someone design my eCommerce store for me then I can add products. BigCommerece and Shopify don't have the theme I want.

I don't recommend starting from scratch, that's almost always an enormous mistake! Not only will it cost a lot, but if you get someone that's not that skilled they will build tons of bugs into your template that you will have to fight for years to come!

Your best bet is finding a template that's similar to what you want and tweaking it from there. The templates that are built into the carts are typically quite sound and have minimal bugs, so that gives you a good starting point.

For our template on this site, we started off with the Munchen - White template that's free within BigCommerce and just made a couple days worth of tweaks to it. It now looks NOTHING like it did when it was initially installed.

Once you choose the template you want to start with, you can certainly use a freelance website like elance.com to find someone experienced with CSS and BigCommerce to make the tweaks. Just make sure you get someone that has a fair amount of feedback and has done jobs similar to yours in the past.

Woo Commerce plugin has a lot of great features, and a strong development team behind it. I would trust it more than some other "free" e-commerce plugins that are available. That said, I do use other "free" plugins simply because they are simpler to use on sites where I only sell digital products for example.

I took a quick look at the free theme you want to use. You are right, it is not Woo commerce enabled. Woo gives you instructions on how to link their plugin to your theme in order to carry the look and feel of the theme on over into your store. However, unless you are interested in messing with coding, I wouldn't recommend that. When building an e-commerce business, you do want to think long term as others have mentioned in previous posts. You need to consider theme updates, WordPress updates and even your commerce plugin updates. Once you have things working together, you want it to stay that way. Otherwise it can cost you. How much it can cost depends on how much or far you have built up your business.

My recommendation to you is to use a theme (free or premium) that is already Woo commerce enabled; if you want to use that plugin. Secondly, use a theme from a reliable source with a team to back up the support. If the theme breaks or even sneezes; you don't want to be hoping to get a reply from the developer sometime, soon, perhaps, maybe.......You want a reply with a fix or help. So, the theme you like is fairly simple. It has a slider and a left side bar that is widget enabled. You want to change colors and add a background image. One example to look at is Woo Themes free theme, "Wootique" as a start. If you read the theme details; you will find it has those features. And, it is a free theme from WooThemes.com. If you like it and want to get started with e-commerce using the "free" route. There you go. There are even "free" tutorials on YouTube to help you get started. One example is:
    There are many, many more.

    Best wishes,

    Tim
