How much of an impact does a knowledge of digital marketing have on eCommerce prosperity for example how much more suited to successfully running an eCommerce store would someone who has digital marketing experience be?

Would like to hear opinions because I am not sure if it's very applicable or slightly applicable.

Thanks.

There is no way it could be useless so I vote useful.

That's true, but how much of a role it plays is really debatable I suppose.

It will give you a very solid competitive advantage. Look at your typical ecommerce site. Most only incorporate very basic IM techniques, if that. You will be way ahead of them if you even only make use of average IM skills.

That said, I wouldn't overthink it, too. Essentially it's about establishing a healthy balance so as not to get bogged down in any one thing at the expence of any other. Initially I would look to optimize the use of IM and only maximize it when the ecom site(s) is/are fully established. That's how companies who make and sell hard goods have always done their product promotion offline, and there's no reason why that formula shouldn't work very well online, too.

By sticking at first to the tried and true, one can't go far wrong. Like a good runner who only makes a dash for the finish like towards the end of the race, pushing ahead of your competitors should ideally come last.

80-90% of the skill set is exactly the same for digital marketing, affiliate marketing & ecommerce. Online marketing is online marketing and it doesn't matter much what type of product you are promoting. The process of creating something, driving traffic to it and converting is basically the same in all those areas.
