Lets say you want to get some experience in retailing via an ecommerce website on a budget for starters, so minimal spending and really only for experience not income, would it be best to:

1. Find a drop ship company and display some of their products on your site?

2. Display affiliate products on your site (that takes the buyer directly to the other retailers site and your get a small % if they buy)

3. Invest in a very small wholesale order and display these products on your site.

4. Other.

Just looking for opinions, thanks.

I would start off with the drop shipping idea. If your website gains popularity and you make a good amount of sales, stick with it! If not, you don't have to worry about losses from excess inventory.

However if the website is a success, but you want a more hands on approach, try placing small wholesale orders and hold your own inventory.

It depends on what kind of experience you're looking to get. Dropshipping is probably the best way to go about this to get a really "abstract" or "neutral" experience, but that can be a little boring.

My entry into ecommerce started with me posting t-shirt ideas on Facebook- they were well-received, so I took orders via PM and then researched t-shirt printing, and then I got a guy to print t-shirts for me (so this is technically closer to #3).

Here's what I recommend- start by figuring out a need in the marketplace that isn't being fulfilled. Figure out what YOU would pay to have solved for you, and then ask around to see if others have the same problem. This involves more thinking and analysis, but I think it's a lot more rewarding in the long run.
