Fashion Jewelry on eBay

Some years back I happened to get a good deal on a lot of cheap jewelry. It was only a casual sideline, but I did pretty well selling it at flea markets, yard sales and even online.

I'm wondering if that might be a good business now, or if eBay has become so saturated with jewelry that it would be hard to get a decent price. I'm talking about stuff sold on sites like liquidators.com in large lots, so I would get it at below wholesale prices.

I'm not really worried about paying too much, but if I don't get any bids it won't do me any good. Not expecting to get rich this way, just seeking another possible income stream. Does anyone have experience with this type of selling?

  • Larry,

Thank you so much for your interest in eBay. Is it a good place to sell jewelry? Yes. Is it a good place to sell Alf lunchboxes, TV mounts, and used celebrity Kleenexes? Yes.

However, you need to make sure you approach it correctly without making some pretty common mistakes.

For example, and this is based on a comment you made: Putting all your items up for auction and expecting there to be enough bids.

It happens more often than not that items sell for well under eBay market value.

One thing to remember that on eBay, you can and should price your items before you list them.

Now, knowing the price is only one aspect of the equation - you ALSO need to know what FORMAT yields that price- and it's NOT always auction.

I have discussed and taught this strategy for YEARS as my '3 rules of eBay', and rule #2 specifically talks about when to list as an auction, and rule #3 talks about when to specifically list as a buy it now.

But the theme is ALWAYS maximize your price - because by far the MOST common misconception I hear, even from 'top sellers' and 'gurus' is that 'lowering your price increases turnover'.

    Not the case.

Increasing your RANK increases turnover - and THAT should be your main goal.

Think like eBay - if YOU make more money on your listings, so does eBay, as the higher items sell for, the more eBay makes in fees! So, it behooves you AND eBay to sell for higher prices! There are ways of exploiting their algorithm!
