How to compete with Amazon and Walmart?

I'm going to build a store. But whenever I find a niche and google the top10 results, Amazon is always there and sometimes Walmart is there too. How should my small store compete with those two giants? They have the best products, lowest prices and best services. My store would be like living in the shadow of them.

What is your strategy to compete with them?

The best strategy for competing with them is LITERALLY not to compete with them. There are so many ways to go about things without competing with the likes of those two why would one even consider it?

An e-commerce site without competing with Amazon? I don't think that's possible, people can find Amazon products everywhere. There is always some page of Amazon shown in google top10.

While Amazon is always a tough competitor, there are ways to distinguish yourself from them. The best bet is to carry a couple products that Amazon does not carry. For example, I live in Hawaii and while Amazon and Walmart both sell coffee, I have access to one small 5 acre farm in Kona that I sell at $30 a pound that Amazon will never have access to. For a coffee snob, getting a coffee that was served at Alan Wong's is a way to distinguish yourself. People wouldn't come to me for Folgers and they won't go to Amazon for high end coffees.

if you are looking to beat them out in google SERPs go for long tail keywords that have high searches but low competition on google page 1

        maybe instead of droid phone
        you type
        android mobile touchscreen phone

        you get the idea

How many times have I read that, but those long tails for anything decent are still quite hard to rank for. And the traffic for any that arn't, don't have any traffic.

Maybe you could start with social media. My wife started a fanpage at facebook to sell used books. It is now driving us a good traffic of sales.
