Hi,

I live in a verry average town where the salaries, house prices and employment rates are all very average. Yesterday I bought some used books which are listed on Amazon for great profits. However I live 50 miles from a city which is quite wealthy and im wondering whether the availability of quality used books will be higher. Has anyone experienced anything like this? If there is it could be rich pickings but means a 100 mile round trip.

I have searched on Craiglist but it isn't very popular in the UK.

No, in the UK your website of choice is gumtree.com

    Craigslist is VERY unpopular there.

Hi I have extensive experience in that business, I would buy thousands of books per month.(just had a baby so i cant scout much) Just sell them on amazon, I think in the UK they now have Amazon FBA. Its their fulfillment service, basically you buy the books, list them, and send them all to amazon, and they warehouse , pick, pack and ship the items to your customers when they sell. You can even list on other sites and amazon will still handle the fulfillment. Pretty cool business model. Works with all sorts of products not just books. But, books typically have the highest margins.

Do some searches for book scouting, fba book selling, etc... Buy a bluetooth barcode scanner and use a pda and you can scan the barcodes of books and know when one is worth buying instantly. With that system you can scan 1000 books in an hour, and usually 10% of them are worth $10 or more. If you can buy them for $1 then you are off to the races.... I started a site about it but havnt touched it in a long time, and only have one post right now. its iSellUsedBooksOnline.com | Tips and tricks on how to sell used books online

Thanks, I am trying to ease my way into it. I have no idea how much I can make or how little. I have phoned some book dealers to see if I can sell them more quickly offline to get me started.

To be honest I dont much about postal insurance or how much recorded delivery costs.

I bought a copy of Fairytales of the Brothers Grimm from the 1930s yesterday for £1. The pages are fine but the cover is missing. Have no idea how much its worth. Maybe £25 or alot more.

ya well unless you know about "old books" i would say stay away from them, if the dust jacket is missing its likely worth a lot less. the tiniest thing can make what seems to be a valuable book, actually worthless. I have a 1st edition james and the giant peach in amazing condition, a 1 word difference makes it only worth $100 instead of $5,000-$12,000! if you want to actually make money doing it you need to go to large book sales held by libraries or community groups and buy commodity books, things that are newer and in demand and have barcodes that can be scanned. My favorite are text books but they can be hard to come across. You can make money, i did about 60k on amazon my first year part time (2-3 days a week) but its alot of work. Now I just "flip" textbooks here and there. meaning I buy textbooks from sellers on amazon then turn around and sell them at a profit through Amazons FBA program. By doing that I buy books for about $5 shipped, then sell then for $25 to $75. that is also time consuming and not too scaleable since the books that I can do that with are limited. The timing is seasonal too since textbook buying season is pretty much only twice a year.
