Unfortunately your questions is too vague to be able to give you a straight answer. If you are using a theme, it is very possible you can make the changes you want in the theme or widget settings. Most themes suggest if you are going to change the back end code of the theme, to make a child theme so those are saved when theme updates come.

I guess my question is, if you are making not just one, but two ecommerce stores, why are you using wordpress instead of a shopping cart. There are both hosted and open source that will allow you to set up ecommerce sites without a ton of technical expertise. Some of those will even allow you to build multiple stores from a single back end.

I know people love wordpress (I do to) but I think there are better solutions for ecommerce.

If you do not know about designing & programing much, i would not touch CSS..well..

how big are your changes?

Which wordpress plugin is using for this ecommerce development ... You may check with plugin section first ... Like wp commerce or some what

It really does depend on what changes you want to make, however, if you are this new to editing websites you might want to take a couple of basic courses on HTML/CSS coding before you jump right in.
