I am new here. So exuse me if my question is silly or somewhat... I gonna build an online store so I'm looking for the best ecommerce software.
The software must allow for customization. I'm not interested in a template that 1000s of others are already using. I also don't want to spend too much - is there a good free or cheap version?
Please let me know what you suggest.

There is never somewhat best ecommerce software. The platform which fully fits your needs is the best. The popular ones include Shopify, BigCommerce, Joomla, Magento, etc. WordPress Woocommerce is another cost-effective option for small businesses.

Another suggestion for online stores is live chat software, which enables you to engage visitors in real time. It has been widely used by ecommerce sites to improve customer satisfaction and sales conversion. If you use Wordpress, there are some chat plugins for you to choose, such as Comm100 Live Chat, Live Person, etc. Good Luck.

Your request is sufficiently vague that its hard to give you a good answer. As you have figured out there are 100's of ecommerce platforms available, and they all do different things well. They all have the ability to customize in one way or another, some easier, some harder.

How many products, categories, sub categories will you have? How many options and variants? Do you need to do recurring orders? How good are you with html, css, php, ruby, asp, javascript, etc? What is your budget? Do you want to run one store? Or multi-store? Do you want to deal with server issues, SSL certificates, maintenance and updates?

All of these things are important to know before we can give you any kind of input as to what works best for you. If you want a true ecommerce platform, then stick with the carts designed for ecommerce, that means forget wordpress, joomla and drupal.

Why not give us details on what you want and need and then we can suggest a cart that might fit your needs. Until then everyone will just be throwing out their personal favorites or what they think is the best.

Magneto is really the cake these days. It's like the wordpress of e-commerce. Free, easy to setup and great for beginners and excellent if you want it to be.

A million developers out there to help with tasks if a plugin isn't already out there.

eBay bought a significant stake in them for a reason ....

You are kidding right? While Magento is powerful you would be the first person to ever say "easy to set up" and "great for beginners".

PayPal bought the company as it fits in with their goal of being a commerce provider as well as GSI Commerce and others.

      - CHEAP/FREE
      - CUSTOMIZABLE/POWERFUL
      - EASY TO USE

You can really only pick two here. If it's cheap and powerful, it won't be easy to use. If it's cheap and easy to use, lots of people are going to be using it. If it's powerful and easy to use, it won't be cheap.

Of course this is a bit vague and oversimplistic, and there are overlaps and grey areas. Your best bet is really to try everything out yourself. Most platforms offer free trials, so try them out and see what you like.

Some cause-oriented hackers recently hacked one of my websites. So I researched what they're about and then donated a large sum of money to the entity they hate the most.

The next time they hack one of my websites I'm going to donate DOUBLE.

I would also have to recommend woo commerce, or go with paypal. For $5 a month you can integrate it on your website. This can cut down on your costs, im not too sure what woo commerce has as a merchant fee.

If you don't know how woocommerce works, then why are you recommending it?

Woocommerce doesn't have a merchant fee because it isn't a merchant or a payment provider. It is an e-commerce solution for wordpress - in regards of product organization and connection *with* payment providers. It is free.

AbanteCart is an ideal open source solution for my small online business. I expected small issues in installation and preparation, but all actually went very smooth. I used softaculous on my host to install, and managed to set site up in about 10 minutes.

    Hi,
In my personal experience and research I found Pinterest the good and free software.

But when i see amazon webstore it solve all problems at once.
I like amazon webstore and recommend it too. The plus point here is the amazon support and easy to build an e-commerce site. Just upload your items in bulk and assign it categories. No monthly fees.

Magento is also a good e-commerce building site, have monthly fees same with Big-commerce.

    Best Regards,
    Zaheera

This depends on your requirements, programming language preference and budget.
some software vendors offer a community version which is free for production use to get started.

For customization, you then need to look for source code access. If you are not efficient with programming , the open source solution might be hard for you. Alternatively, you can find a commercial solution which includes features you require & helpdesk support is also a plus.

what can I say that if you very serious doing eCommerce and want to setup very quickly and need easy admin back-office where you can control everything, then I believe "Opencart" is the best.

Opencart is not WordPress and can never be integrated in Wordpress so it completely separate thing.

When you buy hosting package make sure with the company whether they have OpenCart or not, if they have then you can quickly install from the Cpanel itself.

It is very nice and easy to control your website. If you want more help about it just PM me.

    I hope this helps..
