Domains: EMD(or close to it) vs catchy brand name

Does it make much of a difference between the two options? I am looking at one niche that I think I can rank well for but I don't know if I should take a near EMD which is kind of long and ugly or create something short and catchy, but has no relevant keywords in it. Most of the top ten in Google do not have the keyword in their root domain(well none), but are optimized well otherwise(title, header, etc).

If my keyword was 'luxury dog houses', it would be like choosing between luxurydoghousesonline.com, which screams generic niche site, vs poochpalace.com, which has a little more personality and feels more like a real brand.

How much value does Google place in terms of rankings? I know they adjusted EMDs months ago but does that make them irrelevant? How much value does Joe Schmoe place when searching for a dog house?

Would Facebook and Twitter have risen to stardom if they were called "stuffgoingoninyourlife.com" or "saystuffin140characters.com"?

Your domain name is your identity, don't pick one that limits you because the "algorithm of the day" might prefer a keyword - that could change next week. Build a brand.

This is not easy to answer because Google change his algorithm every day. I have 25 website and for some of them I choose EMD and for some I choose relevant keyword and I get different results but from time to time that changed and comes that domains with relevant keyword rank higher than EMD.
Google is unpredictable and it all matters of time, quality of content, backlinks...
Long time ago I start with Google sniper system and I'm using it still today (with small changes) and it gives me great results.
Try to do split testing. Buy 2 domain, one EMD and other relevant and you will se direct results..

Branded, but if possible the product name in the brand, like brandwidgets.com.

Don't get EMD on an ecommerce site. If you want to rank based on EMD, build out a content site, a resource, but not ecommerce.

There was a time when it was all about the keyword, imagine how hard it is to fend off competition, years later, with keywordkeyword.com now that it doesnt have the same level of ranking boost it used to.
