I am helping a friend with some SEO for his eccommerce store...in the linens/bedding niche. Damn near impossible to rank for anything with the Amazons, Overstocks, Walmarts, etc.

Any tips for me?

I appreciate any help!

Don't waste too much time on SEO. It is pretty much impossible to rank. You best bet is to buy ads from various programs. It can take time to find out which PPC ads work and are worth spending on.

Not what you wanted to hear, but it has been my experience.

No, it's exactly what I needed to hear. I don't want to waste 3 months on something that is not going to work. You could have just saved me a ton of time, money and grey hair. I really do appreciate it.

      I was thinking of re-targetting?

Don't go after major niche keywords unless you really know what you are doing.

Be sure to use unique page titles, meta keywords and meta descriptions for each of your product pages and try to rank for a combination of brand name, product name and SKU#.

It's MUCH easier to rank for these than it is to rank for generic keywords and these are buying keywords which means the traffic converts.

    Hope that helps,
    Anton

I wouldn't say SEO was a complete waste of time, but I would limit the amount of time you spend on it. I know on a few of my sites I do reactive SEO - Write content around the product rather than keywords, then when I see some traffic coming in I optimize based on that.

This is far from the most effective way to do SEO, but it does help drive organic traffic without a huge time investment upfront.

You need some more constructive advice. From my experience you can rely on long tail niche keyword hunting. For example you place your item in shop, it is called ItemX, then make at least the website slug like http://www.website.com/category/Item...cribingTheItem. This easy way around you can get valuable SEO power just from working with your slug. There are 99999 factors affecting the google algorythm and stuffing with keywords won't help. Instead - when you write the description of your item use <strong> or <b> on valuable words, and write you text alone - this are the easiest and long-term working things you can start off with ...

Test keywords using PPC, then fine tune your campaign to the ones that converted, while simultaneously working towards optimizing for them organically.

For driving traffic my advice: Google simply love long tail names. For example: instead giving name to your item "Nike Sport Shoes for Man" name something like this "Sport Shoes, Nike Flyknit Ultralight Second-skin fit High breathability Running Sport Shoes for Man".
