clean e commerce program?

oops I clicked at the link at the bottom of the site and found the software, but its a little pricey for me at the moment. Anyone know of anything similar and cheaper to start out for a low budget newbie? lol

While I do not know anything about the platform, just a few things to consider.

Written in ASP which means you will have to get hosting that supports microsoft sql and asp which tends to be more expensive
ASP is slower than PHP and Ruby platforms. User experience will suffer (thought it may only be slightly)

As others have noted you can start out with Opencart and through the use of modules get the same functionality as that site. Since its PHP you can use the LAMP stack which tends to run cheaper then MSFT based hosting. Or for less than $50 a month use BigCommerce which will give you the same functionality and clean look without all the fuss and muss.

If money is tight why not try opencart its free easy to set up and you can get an almost similar look as that site you linked to

You can always go towards a hosted solution like Shopify too.

Might be worth pointing out the product you mentioned in your OP appears to have a free tier before the $250 licence kicks in.

MOst likely your hosting service is run on what is called the LAMP stack, Linux, Apache and MySQL so it will most likely have a service that will install scripts for you. Look for things like softaculous, fantastico or simplescripts.

Not sure if you have ever tried Joomla with virtuemart 2 but here is a site that gives you very easy to follow step by step instructions on how to build an eCommerce site with no money out of pocket other then your hosting.

Again you are giving up functionality compared to a dedicated shopping cart. These platforms have their place but I personally don't like Joomla and if I was going for a more complicated CMS I would do Drupal and Ubercart over drupal. That being said, if you have more then 3 products, go for a shopping cart.

Posted similar advice to a similar question recently. If you're not technically minded, I would always opt for the better supported solutions like Bigcommerce, Magento GO, Volusion, Shopify simply because their setup processes and help files will get you up and running pretty quickly—and your hosting and security is pretty much taken care of.

That said, your needs might be addressed better with some other solutions mentioned here in this thread but without demoing a few yourself, it will be impossible to know. Sometimes people just like the way a certain piece software works, looks and feels, and if you're going to be using it everyday, that can stand for a lot.

Best of luck with the site—it's obviously a very worthwhile cause.

Ecommerce Advice

I'd suggest Magento - Being part owned by PayPal you know it shouldn't disappear anytime soon. You have all the code so you can alter it how you like and you not dependent on a hosted solution.

There are also loads of developers that are fairly cheap that can help you solve any problems you come across.
