Hello,
I have a plan to build an eCommerce website where I will be able to sell Armed Forces accessories. I used Zen cart but not for long. I also saw Godaddy's new ecommerce shopping cart solutions. In your own opinion which is better?

I get zen cart free by my hosting prodiver and I will have to customise where godaddy is going to charge £200 to setup and £17.00 per month. Fortunately, they have great seo friendly design.

I am very much confuse now.

Regards,

Anam

  • To tell you the truth, zencart is easy to set up yourself. I use hostgator for all my hosting, because they have a C Panel that has a quick-install or the popular eCommerce sites. Once you install it, it's pretty simple to set up yourself. The only hard part is the Template settings. I use prestashop and tomato shop mostly for all our clients, because they have major flexibility. Zencart does too, but I don't really like the interface. 200 dollars is a good price for set up, but monthly can be a pain. As long as your making money from it, its all good.

I would avoid hosting with GoDaddy, if you have already signed the contract, commiserations.

Remember, GoDaddy is the master of the upsell, they will keep trying to sell you more and more. Don't fall for it.

100% agree avoid them. If you ever wanted to leave them you would need to have everything re-build because they have their own e-commerce solution that can't be transferred... Best to create something that you can move where ever you want if need be.

Godaddy's shopping cart solutions will not be nearly as full featured and flexible as a dedicated shopping cart application. Zencart has been around for ever, light weight, tons of modules, etc. If I have any thing bad to say about zencart, it is old looking so I would suggest buying both a nice premium theme(non-responsive - every responsive theme has been buggy IMO), and a mobile CSS that will allow you to give a mobile optimized site.

If your hosting provider already provides Zencart (zencart is opensource), they might have Prestashop and Opencart as well which are a tad bit more modern and are also opensource.

Given that you are willing to pay $17 a month, the hosted shopping carts start around $24.95 a month and will be the easiest way to get up and started. If you are military let me know as I might even have some free upgrades for you, just PM me.

Some of the hosting shopping carts offer a commission only structure too, can cost more if you take off suddenly, but very low risk (and can be switched when you start making sales).
