I am building an ecommerce site for a client. They need total 12 email addresses. Out of 12, one is for mailchimp newsletter. Another one is for sending auto-response when a user places an order. Remaining 10 accounts are for staff.

How should I setup email for them? They are inclined to use Google App service.

How can I implement mailchimp and Google app (gmail) in conjugation?

You can set these all up with Google Apps is fine, its how I run mine and have set up other customers. As for mailchimp, I think you might be a bit confused. All mailchimp wants to do is validate an email is good, just like when you opt-in to an email list, mailchimp sends an email to the email address you want to use as the FROM field and you confirm its good. Everything still runs through mailchimp servers unless you want to play around with their mandrill services but I can't see why you would want to.

As for shopping cart, which one are you using? Opensource or hosted solution? If hosted, you should be able to change the MX settings at your cart to work with Google Apps. If you are using a self hosted cart, you just have to see if it will connect with Google apps or will just send out the order confirmations using the mail functionality of your host. Which cart are you using?

Google Apps is definitely great for your emails, and Mailchimp is fine for emarketing. There are plenty of services that will synchronise contacts from Gmail back to Mailchimp etc but you'll need to be clear how you want that to happen, as Mailchimp will want your contacts to have been acquired in the correct manner. Zapier.com is a great service for things like this and if you've a decent shopping cart, chances are it will allow you to hook this back into your Google Apps setup too.

Also, if you have a number of staff dealing with various overlapping emails and customer enquiries, check out helpscout.net—it looks absolutely fantastic for small teams of people dealing with customers via email. I completed a demo of it recently but didn't set it up completely (which I hope to do soon).
