Have you considered WishList, it's a WordPress Plugin.. I think it's the best solution around for membership websites.

Yeah, there's a ton of plugins that can achieve this. One thing I'd mention though is spam, I tried such a project and found that spam was a problem that could only be resolved with human intervention. (things might have moved on anti-spam wise since then)

Just to confirm what I am asking- I have a language learning site (still to go live) that I need to have (a) accept sign up and payment (b) Control what lessons students can see (c) handle affiliate referrals (d) Send emails to student base etc.

I have been using Amember Pro but ran into some issues with the way that mp3 plays via their 'internal' Flowplayer configuration and now need to find a product that basically does the same as Amember Pro but will not have the issues that I experienced.

No one is answering since most of us use wordpress for our membership sites but since you do not, it limits your options. Can you define custom? Drupal, Joomla or other CMS or a straight html/php site?

Drupal you don't need any paid modules, you can do it all with several well developed modules.

If not you won't get a lot of responses since most of use some type of content management system to protect our sites.

I agree. Most of us are using wordpress since it is very simple and straightforward based on my experience. In wordpress you will find lots of reliable membership plugins. I run my membership site using wordpress plugins and I am comfortable with wordpress plugins.

Unfortunately I think you are going to have a hard time getting answers on this. Almost all of us use a content management system that has modules (either paid or free) to allow us what we want to do. If you are doing your site in PHP anyways, any reason you can't convert it to a drupal site and use Uber to manage your users?

Hi Jonathan,

DAP, while primarily a WordPress plugin, can also protect HTML/PHP sites. But you will lose some of the "awesomeness" that WordPress brings :-)

I love this place.

I've been using Shopify to sell my products (monthly ebook and weekly cookbook subscriptions), then Celery to take pre-orders... so they had to get access to my Shopify account to make it work with Celery... then Chargify to actually handle purchases as a monthly recurring subscription, because Shopify's not set up for that by itself... then Stripe as my payment processor.

End result: HOT FREAKING MESS. $65 for Chargify (their cheapest plan), $59 for Shopify (cheapest plan that allows coupons, which have been central to my marketing strategy - can't do giveaways without a coupon), for a total of $128 a month. And it doesn't work! None of them talk to each other right without me going in and tweaking a bunch of settings, and when something goes wrong it takes forever to figure out which of them it went wrong with. Plus, customers can't manage their own accounts, and if they run into a problem, I have to put in the helpdesk ticket for them! I just put in a coupon code in Stripe for a customer who had been getting the wrong product, and she got charged the full amount anyway. Bah.

So I realized that at this early stage in the game, $128 is more than I'm making. I figured WarriorForum would know what to do. And you DO!

That MemberMouse thing looks like it does everything I wanted from these folks, except it only costs $19.95 a month. I'm going to see if I can redo the site in WordPress real fast and give MemberMouse a whirl.

If you're using Stripe take a look at Moonclerk for recurring billing and coupons etc. I'm setting this up now and it's great. Affordable too.

Thanks! But you know... no level of "affordable" is going to be as affordable as a free WordPress template plus a free WordPress plugin. Update: when I was looking at MemberMouse, I actually found out that PaidMembershipsPro has a free version of their WordPress plugin that's totally fantastic.

It includes unlimited coupon codes, and really goes above and beyond by also integrating with MailChimp so that you can have the appropriate membership levels automatically get added to your mailing lists. For example, someone can click a button to sign up for a weekly mini-cookbook subscription, get added to the MailChimp mailing list for the cookbooks, manage their subscription themselves via the website, and get removed from MailChimp automatically if they choose to cancel... and I never have to touch a thing.

I don't even know what their paid versions must do, if that's the free one... drive my car for me?

I think the main problem was that a PayPal subscription button didn't integrate well with the Shopify storefront. Also, Chargify seemed like it would let me manage my subscriptions in one place, as opposed to PayPal which required me to keep track myself of who had signed up, who had canceled, whose payments hadn't go through yet, etc., which can get VERY messy even with only a small list of subscribers.

Can you be more specific about the issue you are having with aMember? Your present issue excluded, it seems like the right tool for the job.

Have you contacted their support? That would be my first suggestion. If not, you should try it. They are very resourceful.

If that doesn't solve the problem, which would surprise me, then why not use whatever tool you want to play the mp3's, and just protect those pages with aMember?

Having said all of that, if you want to change anything, I would suggest adding Wordpress to the site. Then, you do all of the training materials through Wordpress, and aMember gives you the protection and member management consoles.

It is a very slick, powerful combination.

Hi Jack,

Thanks for your post. The issue I have is that I discovered that some of my audio and video does not play on some mobile phones. I am using JW Player. I contacted Amember support and was informed that I would need to use flowplayer for which they have support and that should resolve the problem. The only issue is that the flowplayer control bar is big and non 'modifiable'. With the JW PLayer I have constructed my site using a very small player on the left of the page and the word on the right. Because the flowplayer is the way it is I would have to redesign and redo my site completely but then would still be stuck with an 'ugly' play control in an otherwise beautiful site! All in all this whole process is proving to be an absolute nightmare to try and resolve satisfactorily.

Have you experimented with any other players?

Well this story has been long and frustrating but I have finally sorted it out. I landed up implementing jplayer, a HTML5 player (not to confused with JWPlayer).

I was still running into problems and then we moved the video and audio outside of the Amember security and BINGO all worked fine. The content is not however protected but it is well hidden and anyone who has enough time and motivation to unearth the media folder has, I suppose, earned the right to pirate it

Having said that if they are a member it would be just as easy for them to download it all anyway. We can only do so much...

I assume, but have not tested it, that JWPlayer would also work in this configuration.

So there you have it.

For what it's worth, DAP now supports Stripe.

And we have added some cool extras to overcome some of Stripe's limitations (for eg., the first payment of a monthly subscription in Stripe, could take up to an hour to go through - it doesn't go through immediately. So DAP splits your subscription into a one-time payment that goes through *now*, and the rest is created as an ongoing subscription from the next month (say).

And you can also do free trials, as well as coupons with Stripe and DAP.
